Fall Practice Thread

Could be something, could be absolutely nothing. But on this play it looks like the starting 5 with Ross included.

Could of course just be one of the many teams put together though out a practice.

Edit: I am mistaken and Demary was not on the blue team.

Early in the practice season they try to balance the teams so they can evaluate guys. Towards the start of the season you'll see the starters play together more to gel a bit.

Kinda strange they had Demary and Smith on the same team, though, maybe trying to work on them playing together/Demary playing off ball a bit.

Even though no PG, have to take Blue there with AK, Solo & Reed, and Ross. No one is stopping Tarris.

First day of practice was today and there seems to be a lot of footage on Twitter. Going to post what I see here.

If anyone sees anything else related to fall practices feel free to add!
Thanks HW

In the clip I’m pretty sure that was Smith on the blue team there (hand wrap). So they are probably doing a lot of switching things up. I do expect during the season that Smith and Demary play together as Smith seems like more of a natural PG though.

Yeah the other thing to notice about that lineup was… are they working shopping Solo at PG??

My guess would be it’s a way to force him to work on his on-ball skills because that’s clearly a point of emphasis for him to take the next step both in college and as a pro prospect. There’s an ocean between that and slotting him in at PG in real game time.

Perfectly stated.

There is definitely an ocean in between working on the ball handing and being a PG in real game time. Solo brought the ball up the court at different times, but I wouldn't say he was facilitating offense like Hass.

I’m happy that’s finally being addressed and happening in some capacity. We have a lot of depth at the position so I don’t expect him to play it here this year or even next year since we have Demary.

But his best NBA prospects would be if we can continue to hone those kind of skills for him. At the end of the day Westbrook started next to Collison at UCLA.

I think you’re over exaggerating with the ocean thing as well. If his handles are improved that’s a pretty big step in itself to be able to do it for him. His handles in general would open up so much to his game (which is why it’s so frustrating that it was so bad at this point and hopefully it’s much improved this year).

Maybe those long arms don't translate to tight handle, listed at 7 foot.

Jeremy Lamb’s handle made a significant jump from his freshman to sophomore year with similar, if not longer arms.

I don’t think having long arms have much to do with tight handle. It’s very much so a skill that’s easily developed. Maybe a skill that is the easiest to develop.

I always thought Solo's handle was good. He does not commit a lot of turnovers. He can dribble with speed, receive a mid-court transition pass and slow it down at the opposing 3 line backing off from fully penetrating, he can bring the ball up and keep defenders away. What Solo doesn't do is readily facilitate while dribbling. I don't think he sees the floor in that way. For some it's a natural gift, or even a well-learned skill. Directing an offense is a whole other level on top of that.

Towards the end of last year he started making some impressive passes off the dribble finding guys in the lane (not just kick outs for 3s).

It’s almost like if you ask someone to do something, they’ll get more comfortable and better at it. Hoping we see the growth in all these aspects from Solo as he’s given more responsibility and leash to do more.

You keep mentioning these things as though you know they weren’t working on it with him in practice. Your tone on certain things is weird. You’ve said 3 things just in the last 4 posts about the staff “finally” working on it…maybe he FINALLY got to serviceable enough to do it while the staff has been working on it for 3 years?

I’m quite sure as a 6’3 2 guard, the staff understands & understood he needed to work on his handle and attack. I have no clue why you think you’re the only one who recognizes that, or that you’re sure they weren’t until now.

I’m with you on some concepts, but you take them way too far and with too much false certainty.

Maybe he just learned how to pass better (that’s obviously what happened).
