It seems more obvious this year because high draft picks are being waived, but it’s been going on for years. Those “generational” (I hate that term) type players come into the league and take up a roster spot for many years. Think Fowles, Griner, McCoughtry, Taurasi, Bird, Parker, Delle Donne, Ogwumike, Vandersloot, Charles and Stewart. That’s basically 10% of the league. In the past, vets would get cut in favor of rookie contracts. Rookies would stick for a year or two and turn over. But for some reason, the cba is reversing that trend. But then again, you look at some of the awful wnba teams and think these are the best players out there? There’s just such a big disparity between the top tier players and the rest. So many players get to this level and are just role players, and sometimes you favor having a vet with experience over a rookie for that role. I don’t have any answers, I think the league needs to expand. But if they do, the talent needs to be dispersed evenly. The bottom teams are already so bad, last thing you need is another 2-4 irrelevant franchises. Money is such an issue unfortunately. Also recently, the drafts haven’t been deep at all. Jackie young, Charli collier, and Rhyne Howard as 3 of the last 4 one picks has to be the weakest stretch of talent in quite a while. If the incoming talent isn’t beating out the returning, this is bound to happen. Sorry for rambling, but I think in a few years time the leave will look very different. A lot of mainstays will retire and there will be opportunity for a new generation. Geez I got off topic. Shame about Evina.
