You can be a sportswriter, broadcaster and analyst without having played or coached like Michael Kay, Vin Scully, Lupica, Francessa, all of the ESPN broadcasters. This does not mean they always know what they're talking about though.
If only Davis had the background in basketball that (arguably) more relevant hoopswriters like Jeff Goodman, Gary Parrish, Dana O'niell, Andy Katz and Pat Forde have. Err....

I agree with you on this 100%...but the guys you mentoined are play by play guys and/or talk show hosts. Most play by play guys never played the sport they are calling, they just have to have enough knowledge to know whats going on. Seth Davis is supposed to be an analyst. Try to think of any other in-game or studio analyst in any sport that does not have a background in playing the sport in college or on a professional level.
