I surely thought you would be linking to Seth and his man sweater's appearance on HBO's Real Sex.

This is awkward as hell but Sports by Brooks is actually more of a than Davis and I kinda wish he never even mentioned this irrelevant bit of defamation.

I've never understood how he's reached that spot with no basketball background to speak of.

A lot of people in sports have no background in the sports they analyze. Theo Epstein, AJ Smith, etc. After high school, many don't play college sports. Then again, I'm always suspicious of the guys with well-placed parents to get them ahead.

Strange thread.

You folks are actually wondering how a guy with a media background some how made it onto television?

This will shock and amaze, but most people in the sports media have a media background and not a sports background.

You can be a sportswriter, broadcaster and analyst without having played or coached like Michael Kay, Vin Scully, Lupica, Francessa, all of the ESPN broadcasters. This does not mean they always know what they're talking about though.

If only Davis had the background in basketball that (arguably) more relevant hoopswriters like Jeff Goodman, Gary Parrish, Dana O'niell, Andy Katz and Pat Forde have. Err....

You can also play sports and know even less.

I agree with you on this 100%...but the guys you mentoined are play by play guys and/or talk show hosts. Most play by play guys never played the sport they are calling, they just have to have enough knowledge to know whats going on. Seth Davis is supposed to be an analyst. Try to think of any other in-game or studio analyst in any sport that does not have a background in playing the sport in college or on a professional level. There are very few.

...and this is what I'm getting at it. Obviously I know you can talk sports and cover sports without a sports background, I listen to sports radio all day long at work that is hosted by guys who never played in college or the pros. But Davis doesn't sit on CBS's panel as an insider, he serves as an "analyst" breaking down the games surrounded by former players and coaches. There are very people in Davis's spot across other networks.

I think he's also picked the Zags into the FF at least 5 or 6 times. Seemed like he did every year for a while there, when I actually listened to him. Stopped after his relentless bashing of T Brown in 2004

I will never go to another "Link" again. Most fans wish they can be a sports writer or broadcaster and would do just as good. I know I could be just as obnoxious as Francesa. You just need to be a little lucky sometimes.

yet another example of not what you know, but who you know and who your daddy/mommy is. . . .this is how Chelsea Clinton and Jenna Bush get hired by NBC, how Chris Cuomo gets an ABC gig, Nika Brezinski ends up on MSNBC, etc etc

Hopefully, Pitino reads that summer camp story about Sammy and can feel better about himself.

Seth Davis' aunt is hadassah leiberman, wife of us sen Joe leiberman. when Seth finished at duke, Joe leiberman called the new haven register and told them they were going to hire Seth. They did.
He had to cover high school sports and he hated it but he made a living out of embarrassing high school kids and their coaches.
It's also assumed Joe made the same call when Seth jumped from the register to sports illustrated.
