@Cheeky I love watching his defense against Florida for that 11 point flurry. Changed the game.

He's been named to the pre season Cousy watchlist:

Senior guard Ryan Boatright has been named to the 2015 Bob Cousy Watch List - http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/110414aaa.html… | #UConn #BleedBlue

If you base on NBA potential, Boat would slip a bit due to height, but based on ability to impact the college game, Boat is definitely top 10.

Marcus Paige at #2. Nobody could ever convince me he isn't overrated at 2. If he wasn't at Unc he wouldn't be that high

More than anything it shows the relative lack of star power in the game this year. All of the truly elite underclassman left (i.e. no Sullinger, Harrison Barnes, or Marcus Smart decisions) and the freshman class doesn't have 1/10 of the hype that last year's had.

how can you say that a freshman who hasn't even seen the court is the 3rd best player in the country?

Probably some combination of the fact that they're good at scouting high school players and the recent performance of many freshman who have been that good or better? I'm not sure what's so complicated about this. You say "hasn't even seen the court" like NCAA basketball is the only level of basketball that exists. Maybe they're not automatically wrong for not disregarding apparently relevant data on the performance of incoming freshmen.

The one-and-done rule was put in place 8 years ago. In seven of those eight years, the postseason AP All-American 1st-team has included at least one freshman (three of the years had two freshman).

If any of you guys provide me with a crow, I will certainly eat it. I like being proved wrong in instances like these.

Are you asking for confirmation that Boatright made the top 10? Because he definitely did.

Remember this is the ACC (ESPN) doing the rankings. Spots 2, 3, 4 are all ACC players who could have been lower.

I'm not sure I agree with this. It's a bummer, but college basketball players just aren't that good anymore. If they were good, they'd be in the NBA by now. Boatright shot under 40% last year and is a top-10 player in the country? Everyone has warts now. It is what it is. I suppose that makes for more interesting conversations, but when a 13 and 6 7-footer is considered the best player in the country, it's pretty clear that the talent level just isn't what it used to be.

I don't understand how Harrell is not above Kaminsky. The guy is more of an animal than a real life Badger, let alone the next Mehmet Okur

This hurts our chances of winning a championship. We need some Goodman quotes to get back some mojo.
Here you go:

I'm also not buying Ryan Boatright at No. 10. He's talented and really came around the second half of last year, but he's too erratic and inconsistent. With Shabazz Napier gone, Boatright will have the ball in his hands the majority of the time, and I'm just not sold he can be The Guy on a top 10-to-20 team.

Some will scream this is full of bias but I think it's fair. Love Boat but I was shocked he was in top 10.

From Insider:

Most overrated in #CBBRank

Bilas: While I really like Ron Baker of Wichita State, and believe he is a top-50 player, I do not have him rated as a top 10 player, nor would I place Juwan Staten of West Virginia or Ryan Boatright quite that high.

Goodman: I'm going with a trio of point guards who are a tad high for my liking.

I am a huge Fred VanVleet fan, but I'm just not sold he's first-team All-American material -- which is essentially where we have him at No. 5 overall. VanVleet is so poised, takes care of the ball and is a tremendous leader. However I just don't know if he would be quite as productive if he played in a high-level league and against high-level athletes consistently. I'm all for VanVleet as a top 25 guy, but not ready to buy he's in the elite class and one of the top two guards in the entire country.

Another point guard who is a tad high in my estimation, at least based on his play last season, is Kentucky sophomore Andrew Harrison (No. 18). I'm still not sold he'll have the ball in his hands at the end of this season with the game on the line. Freshman Tyler Ulis is a superior point guard in my opinion but Harrison has a year under his belt and did play better down the stretch last year.
.......
Bilas: Of those left off of the list completely, I would spotlight Louisiana Tech's Speedy Smith, Justise Winslow of Duke, Norman Powell of UCLA, Justin Jackson of North Carolina, Aaron Thomas of Florida State, Tyler Ulis of Kentucky, Daniel Hamilton of UConn, Shawn Long of Louisiana,Vincent Hunter of UTEP, D'Angelo Harrison of St. John's, Romelo Trimble of Maryland, and Przemek Karnowski of Gonzaga.

I don't have an issue with them not buying Boat as a top 10 player, I'm shocked myself that he's that high. Great Final 4 performance, played well overall in the 4 games before that, but Boat did not play that great in the regular season. It was a struggle most nights for him to crack 10ppg against quality teams, and it wasn't because he was "deferring", he just couldn't hit shots with any kind of consistency. His play and DD's were a big reason for the sometimes up and down play during the regular season.

He did play most of the season with a bum leg (ankle?). Not sure how much that interfered with his shooting. Similar to Bazz's sophomore year in which he played the season with a stress fracture in his foot. I'm hoping Ryan stays healthy all season.

we heard reports of tendinitis and stuff like that but Boat struggled scoring against high major teams from the very start of the season against MD. Bazz had to eventually get his foot operated on, I don't really think its the same.

I like how Bilas gave DHam a shout-out. I think the kid is going to be special.

good point, boatright didn't attend any pg camps because he was 'getting his legs back'. Napier looked much more healthy on the court his senior year, maybe boatright experiences the same. although i could never really pinpoint what part of his game the tendinitis affected...the game has yet to 'slow down' for him the way it did for bazz even in 2012-2013.

I agree, which is why I tend to shake my head at the narrative that UConn started to win in March because Boatright finally learned to defer to Bazz. He deferred to Bazz all season - much more so than he did in 2013 - and for some reason his efficiency plummeted (which was the opposite of what we expected). IMO, the biggest difference between March Boat and January Boat was that he was making shots. His floor game was pretty strong all season.

But we also shouldn't forget how good Boatright was offensively in 2013. He averaged 15.4 PPG and 4.4 APG on respectable shooting splits. Really, it was the greatness of him and Bazz that kept the the team above water early in that season when Daniels and Calhoun were finding themselves. If he can blend the scoring proficiency of 2013 Boatright with 2014 Boatright, he will live up to this ranking IMO.
