3 months is the boiler plate recovery period from joint surgery.
Month 1: Wean off painkillers, stretching exercises as Physical Therapy
Month 2: Increasing the Range of Movement. Some Resistance. PT/OT
Month 3: Increased Resistance OT

In past years the quick hop off the bench to give a player the hook (after 10 seconds) or to teach a ref to do their job was a Calhoun trademark. It simply won't be the same with a cane or walker :)

It's not clear to me from the news reports whether the fracture involved his joint or just a bone in the hip area. I'm also less concerned about coaching (which he can't really do now anyway) than recruiting. I wonder how much it may restrict his travel to see and meet recruits.

This is Coach Calhoun, the man whom Chuck Norris has nightmares about. He'd jump off the bench with one leg to escort said player to the bench!

Does that mean we have to wait until October for him to announce he's coming back?

12 week is 3 months. The official range max end date is therefore early November.
A 70 year old recovering from a hip fracture in 3 months is something I'll take in a heartbeat, and I hope it's as simple as that. And, of course, regardless of basketball I wish the best to JC and I hope he makes a complete recovery.

I'm very worried about our 2013 recruiting, this class is extremely important to us with 5 scholarships available and a need for some bigtime recruits. I'm just not confident that any top kids are going to be convinced to play for Calhoun with his age and never ending health issues. You know every coach recruiting against us is pointing out how often Calhoun is sick/injured and how he can't even make it through a full season anymore. I love Calhoun and am beyond thankful for everything he has brought us but there are several things working against us right now, I'll say it again and probably get flames for it but I strongly believe the program would be more healthy going forward if Calhoun retired and Ollie took over. All that being said I hope Coach Calhoun had a quick and healthy recovery with very little pain.

2013 recruits know that they would only be playing a maximum of one year with Calhoun as their head coach. There's a reason why every recruit who talks about Uconn mentions Kevin Ollie.

Glad he's in great spirits! Hoping for a quick recovery! love this quote

"It's always something," Calhoun told ajerseyguy.com. "My brother and my wife say they are taking my bike away."

I predict he is rolled out in a wheelchair with an IV for midnight madness...,
Then Calhoun rips off the tubes.....
Next Jim Calhoun bounds out of the chair tearing off his shirt to reveal a newly designed Husky Uni, name on back "FtheNCAA"
Lastly Calhoun grabs a microphone and a basketball, takes off running and throws down a vicious slam dunk contest winner while screaming "HERE'SSSSSSSSSSSS WHAT EMMERT CAN DO WITH HIS POSTSEASON BANNNNNNNNNNN !"

12 weeks takes us into November. Dont forget about the Mich St game in Germany mid month then the St Thomas tournament a couple weeks later. That is a lot of travel for the first few weeks of the season compared to years past. Who knows if JC would be up to that so soon?

Good call from his brother and wife. Seemed like from what they said, AJ and Kemba wanted to do that too.

Whatever the timetable, I hope he makes a full recovery. My grandmother broke her hip when she was in her 70s and it was the beginning of a bad downhill slide. That was 25 years ago though and she wasn't a NCAA coach, so I guess it's kind of apples and oranges. In any event, here's wishing the best of luck to Jim Calhoun.

jim calhoun needs to retire. i cant believe how this man suffers a serious injury and people are worried about recruiting. to he%% with recruiting! jc needs to retire immediately and just concentrate on enjoying his remaining years in comfort with his wife and family. this is a sign jim. let it go. you have nothing to prove and no one to beat because youve already won. i really hope he announces his retirement in the next few weeks.

I too, sometimes, like to be completely alone.

He is not alone!

But, this thread would be much more interesting, IMHO, if there were more discussion about who will be the "acting HC" while Coach C is recovering?

Peace,

John Fryer

At this point everyone accepts Jim's UConn career is over in 19 months---or sooner. I can't see any reason for an announcement before Midnight Madness for an acting game coach and Christmas break if JC has to scratch the season. I think Blaney and JC are a package deal in this--I'd expect the replacement to name their own assistants. Complicating the matter are Manuel and Herbst likely wanting a job search rather than annointing Ollie. I could see a retirement at end of season after interiews and a new coach is named. Otherwise that whole issue becomes disruptive during the season.

Ollie might be the preferred choice: That doesn't mean Manuel and Herbst will fail to perform due diligence and see who else is available and properly consider the avaialable market/ Coaches like to think they can name their successor: that isn't the way it goes in high profile programs.
