Eric Cobb arrested for murdering mother.

.-.
I have no memory of Cobb. Horrible about his mother. Just can’t fathom why he would do this.

Standout?
Apologies for the humor in this context, but if you look at a team photo from his freshman year, he does kinda stand out.

Horrible story. Wonder what broke him.

As I remember it, she was a huge backer of his, and actually came to the Boneyard

What an awful story. I remember he had back to back great games his senior year and you could tell he had talent but seemed to be difficult even then. I think I remember he had issues at SCar, too. Just awful.

Sad story. I remember Cobb and he was a big dude you didn't want to mess with. Terrible.

Ok that's a little to close to home ... Duval oh vey. That's a horrible prayers to the Cobb family. Never heard it called mid westside before though. That's a new one to me.

Well this quote from one of the stories is pretty revealing:

"The friends said Winford was afraid of her "possessed" and schizophrenic son who needed medication but couldn't afford it."

Just another sad story about mental health.

You may be thinking of Rakim Lubin whose mom posted here. He actually died recently... got out of prison and drowned in a pool IIRC.

I had totally forgotten that Cobb was also kicked out of USC before going JUCO. And was suspended from our team for a month for undisclosed reasons by Hurley.

Hate to say it, but for some people prison is the best place to be so at least they can get meds in them. My BIL was one of them. Never has healthcare except when he's locked up.

Such a tragedy.

Goes to show that recruiting is so much more than just landing top talent and skill. KO may have been a great motivator and knower of the game inside-out, but his shortfalls in character judgement really poisoned the program.

Reminds me of what Hurley said last year. Something to the effect of, 'We don't just interview the recruits, we interview their entire family'

Prayers to all those affected by this.

Unfortunately he also didn’t recruit very well for skill either.

But not to derail the thread, this is awful for all the reasons that have nothing to do with basketball

I was thinking why don’t I remember who this standout player is?
Me too.... When I heard the news and saw the name, I immediately thought "walk on". I guess I'm not as big a 50 year fan as I think I am.

So sad.

Rest in peace to the mother, first and foremost.

This is a great reminder of why I love Hurleys character scouting. He may have a couple knuckleheads, but I’ll be surprised if a Hurley recruit does something this tragic.

I mean schizophrenia doesn’t pick and choose based on character. We should withhold judgement without knowing the full story

This story has me really upset and sad the more I've read into it. His mother must've been so proud of him earning a basketball scholarship to a major University and it sounds like she was a really good person. There were so many warning signs though. The kid was kicked out of South Carolina partly due to an arrest and never should've been offered a scholarship by Ollie. He was suspended for 1 month at UConn for conduct detrimental to the team. He has a violent arrest history with one of the arrests assaulting a police officer.

It was just him living with his mother and neighbors said he was always violent with her and she was scared of him. She was just 51 years old and this never should've happened. It's so incredibly sad what happened to her.
