Entire’ College Football Team Reportedly Could Enter the Transfer Portal

To an extent in his particular scenario it's as much a personal decision (he's leaving the team, Mora has demonstrated that's not a requirement) plus (perhaps) a decision by the coaches to not allow him to continue (if he was willing to still compete with the team while working through the portal). Feels like Mora may be unusual by allowing players who wish to continue to play to participate in the bowl even while going through the portal process.

It’s a mess…

WOW! You gotta hope that they reassess this window. There's no need for it to open before bowls/playoffs. The agents can wait until after the Championship game before they start brokering their deals.....

Reality is that spring practices loom as important decision to move on by the start of the spring semester.

Edit: the way to solve this is to end the spring practices but I think that'll be a hard kill

After the season Army had, this has to be a bit of a letdown.
I'll say. They got pants and demolished by Notre Dame on national TV, lose to Navy convincingly, and then they find some weak ass participant to play against for a bowl game-yeah that's a bad ending to the season even though they did win the AAC title game.

Exactly. I very much concur with this opinion.

The transfer portal even affects the Service Academies. There was a time when you couldn't leave schools like Westpoint after a certain point. That has changed quite a bit these days. I just saw this blurb about a Westpoint football player. Looks like he was recruited to UConn a few years back as well.

Army received more unfortunate news after the game had concluded, as Black Knights running back Kanye Udoh entered the transfer portal, per On3's Pete Nakos.

Udoh was second on the team in rushing yards (1,117) this season, behind quarterback Bryson Daily (1,532). Udoh had 11 touchdowns and averaged 6.2 yards per carry in Army's triple-option offense.

I don't mind the unlimited transfers, but I think they should at least be some penalty after say 2 or 3 transfers (outside of things like grad schools and coaches leaving/getting fired). I don't think they need to sit out the whole year, but should be ineligible for say 4 games. So they still get 2/3s of the season, but makes them second guess constantly moving. I know it'll never happen and it's probably a dumb idea.

Curious how an Army player transfers. Aren't they committed to the military for a certain number of years? So they get a dishonorable discharge to transfer?

After you have been there for so long if you leave you owe them a few hundred thousand.

I have the same questions. They used to have a time limit to leave but not so sure anymore. It was in the sophomore year I recall. He may be a sophomore.

An alum who is not happy told me there is more to the story, but coachnis trying to stay above the sewage.

It appears that he handled the situation beautifully. I'm glad he found a soft landing.

* West Point

Unless academy rules changed, the post-grad military service commitment begins effective the 1st day of third year.

Before the third year, first day of classes, any transferring Cadet ot Midshipmen is not obligated to X (5?) years of military service, nor to reimburse academy costs (effectively tuition, R&B, etc), nor obligated to reimburse pay received during their plebe and 2nd years.

I believe that is the current rule. And you can’t “ buy your way out” by repaying. I believe if your are given a pro contract there is some special treatment like you go into the reserves and get assigned to where your team plays rather than active duty in Iraq. But those options are limited.

It used to be if you transferred after starting your 3rd year you also only had a brief time to get accepted and start your new school. Otherwise you went in as an enlisted man or woman.

I find Deion rather annoying but I applaud him for this. He wanted his top two players to play in the bowl and have the opportunity to do he made sure they had a major insurance policy taken out for both Hunter and Sanders to protect them. It allows for the whole team to play and not be a shell of a game with opt outs. This doesn't solve the portal issue but it helps with top talent sitting out.

No those rules are absolutely the same. The federal govt does not give a crap about your portals feelings.

I think after the second year you're on the hook for military service but I might be wrong. Before that it's just having to pay them back but it ain't cheap

Edit: everybody beat me to it. I need to read more first
