I thought that it was the winning coach's job to make the first move, and then it would just cascade back and forth b/w the benches. It seemed futile that NC was pressing so late in the game as it would have been divine intervention if they came back from that deficit, especially as how they played the entire game. Were hubby and I being too critical of Coach McG?

No, the losing coach usually indicates surrender with the first subs or court action.

Yeah, it's the losing coach who is supposed to make the first move.

However, while I heard (non UConn) fans behind me declaring it was over with about 4 minutes to go, I will never forget watching a Duke - MD men's game, when I lived in MD and followed the team. The Turtles had a ten point lead with one minute to go, and lost, so I never consider a game over until we get to the one minute mark with more than a ten point lead.

I don't begrudge any coach who is still trying to win with 90 seconds and 15 points, it isn't over then. I do get annoyed when there are 20 seconds and a dozen points, and the coach doesn't call them off. I don't recall exactly when Muffett called them off, but I don't recall thinking it was far off my personal towel throw in mark.

I'll also note it is on the coach, if a player is still pressing with ten seconds left, it is on the coach to call off the dogs, not the player.

I thought that Geno made the first mass substitution right after we took the shot clock violation.

Coaches on the losing end of the scoreboard will usually wait until there is 30-40 seconds left in an NCAA Tourney game to call of the press. While they probably know there is no hope of coming back from 15 points, they don't want to concede that the season is essentially over and are hoping for some kind of miracle.

I remember that game well, for some reason I was taping the game to show to the team that I was coaching at the time. The ending became quite a teaching tool.

How fortunate that you picked that one, a lot of potential lessons there.

I agree. I don't begrudge anyone for fighting a bit longer in an NCAA game. It's hard to give up for good.

I do recall noting that Muffet wasnt calling timeouts after some of those late 3s fell. If she thought they still had a chance, she would've. So at least she didn't drag things out. I just *love* when teams are down 10 and call a timeout with 12 seconds left.

No. Muffett started sending in the subs and then Geno responded in kind. As Icebear and Phil pointed out, the normal protocol is for the losing team to do it first.
