INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The NCAA's board of directors endorsed a proposal Thursday giving schools in the five largest football conferences more autonomy and more voting power in changing rules within the organization.
The changes would allow the wealthiest schools to adopt some legislation on their own, including provisions for money beyond what current scholarships cover, up to the full cost-of-attendance, expanded insurance coverage and money to help families travel to NCAA tournaments.
The proposal would affect the 65 schools in the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC.
NCAA President Mark Emmert supports the move. A formal vote is expected in August. If passed then, the transition could begin this fall.
The board also approved allowing schools to provide unlimited meals and snacks to athletes.

Between this stuff and the union issue, this will get interesting. NCAA supports restraint of trade, and rails against the players having more control. Oh, I forgot, this is all for the good of the student athletes.

Money talks and Emmert needs their support to stay employed. Reasonable to assume a deal has been made.

A formal vote of the schools or the NCAA board? If it is the schools it is hard to see how it will pass.

Unbelievable.

Why is this unbelievable?

We have known this is coming for about two years. Most people support the idea of full cost of attendance and expanded insurance and UCONN's star player was a catalyst for unlimited food.

It will be interesting to see if the MAC, Sunbelt, Mountain West, Big East and CUSA adopt the new rules. The AAC has already stated they will hang with the big boys. If other conferences drop down the AAC will have a strengthened position. The year two review ESPN agreed to when they matched NBC's bid should mean more money for the AAC.

Expect some sports to be cut, that will be the painful part.

Soooo, let me see if I understand this. Emmert's idea to fix the problem of people noticing how unfair the NCAA is, is to make college sports more unfair. The NCAA needs to replace Emmert and try again or, better yet, just dissolve the corrupt group while the colleges set up a simple organization of one rep from each conference to meet annually and make decisions. I don't think they realize that if the system is seen as inherently unfair, few people will watch or buy merchandise.
