I'm extremely disappointed and hurt by UConn's performance last night, but not surprised.
Any good FCS team (Towson preseason #11) has occasionally demonstrated over recent history that they are perfectly capable of competing, and sometimes beating, mediocre and worse BCS teams. Some times they beat some of the best (eg National FCS champ beating Michigan a few years ago.) Last year Towson whipped a perennial FCS power and former UConn 1-aa rival New Hampshire, and gave LSU a pretty good scare. Townson was not going to be a pushover.
So I'll give accolades to the kids who won, UConn lost to a very capable FCS team. (Remember how this board smirked when Rutgers and Temple lost to, at those times very good FCS teams named New Hampshire and Villanova).
UConn learned a tough lesson. They are not good enough to chalk up wins against any opponent before the cleats are put on.....FBS or FCS.
Disappointed and hurt that we lost.....absolutely. But I'd rather play the likes of New Hampshire, Villanova, Townson, Delaware, Richmond and walk away with a true guage of weaknesses (if there are any, before entering league play) than whip up on the Southern Texas, Rhode Islands, Maine, Hofstra, Liberty's and walk away with a false impression of how good we are and then wonder why we lost to (or find it so hard to score against) midling BCS teams like Temple, WMU, USF, etc.
Despite how good Townson may have been, I was upset at how confused the offense seemed to be. How many times did you witness Whitmer resetting players to "correct positions" for plays being called? Really frustrated because many of the players have been in the PP system going on 2- 3 years and look like they only glanced at the table of contents of a play book.
Is it on the players? Is it on the coaches? I don't know but guessing it may be a combination of everything to some degree.
There has been a similar disappointing kick off game in UConn history that I can remember, which resulted in a coaches dismissal. UConn at the 1-aa level playing University of New Haven (Division II power) in the early 1990's. They lost 14-13.......and coach Tom Jackson was gone at the end of the season and Skip Holtz came on board in December of the same year. The difference was, Tom Jackson had a pretty successful era of 1-aa football at UConn until that year.
