If Stef could play well with Stewie, then there would have been no problem playing with EDD.

Of course, Stef could play with EDD. No question. But she might well have been slower to develop as a leader with EDD ahead of her. She very possibly would have had less minutes. She could have drawn less attention to her game.

It is all guessing and a meaningless exercise but it is very possible Stef's development could have been slowed because the pressure to develop quickly would have been eased.
