In his article on UConn's series against the Cougars, he finishes with:
"Depending on what happens in the ever-shifting realignment game, BYU might eventually be a member of whatever the Big East Conference becomes. The Cougars, who are independent in football after winning 23 conference titles in the Western Athletic Conference and the Mountain West Conference, are often mentioned as a viable candidate for Big East Membership."

Um Ed, that ship sailed when Boise & SDSU decided to stay out west.

You never know. If the ACC gets raided and ESPN can cancel their TV deal because they have lost their top schools (say FSU/UNC/UVa/Va Tech/ Ga Tech/Clemson), then the remaining ACC schools will be free agents like BYU and the NBE and Boise/SDSU will be able to leave for small exit fees. Would make a good league.

The fact that BYU wasn't interested in the Big East when it wasn't completely horrific is all we need to know about their potential to join going forward.

BYU makes double the Big East schools for just 4 home football games.

Ed should stick to Torrington and Naugy.

BYU like ND would prefer to be independent if that is feasible, but their scheduling difficulties are increasingly severe and BCS/playoff access is another issue. BYU insiders were a few years ago capitulating to the idea that they had to join a conference. BYU would demand specific terms including no competition on Sunday in any sport, this requirement blocked a deal with the Big 12. If there was enough money and their terms were met they would join a national "best of the rest" conference. There would be enough money if the ACC broke up.

Even if BYU doesn't join the conference for football, they might join in other sports and seek a scheduling alliance for football.

BYU would just rejoin the Mountain West. It's all the quality of the Big X with the bonus of... You know being there.

BYU has only been independent for two years and that their future schedules are better going forward than they were in 2011 and 2012.

Next year, they play Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia Tech, Utah, Boise State, Utah State, Nevada and Notre Dame.

I don't think the playoff scenario figures that highly on their list of concerns.

Concerns over scheduling aren't dead. They reached a peak at the time the Pac and B1G were considering going to 9 or 10 conference games and/or scheduling each other for OOC; but the major conferences are still looking to expand, increase conference schedules to 9 or 10 games to add inventory for networks, and that leaves fewer slots for BYU. The scheduling problem is especially severe in Oct-Nov.

They do have a good schedule next year. They are concerned about their ability to maintain such schedules. That said, they do have the luxury of being picky given their large national TV audience.

Ed must have googled realignment and read articles from last summer...if he knows how to google
