That pressure they use is pretty solid and they attack the lane with speed and aggression. They also foul almost every second and dare the refs to call it. Hurley may get a lot of press over his antics but Pitino is up there.

In my opinion arguing with the referees over calls is a form of cheating.

Realistically all coaches do it. Hurley is more demonstrative. Pitino relies on well placed words and glares. K covered his mouth and cussed a storm.

This SJU team reminds me of some of Cooleys PC teams. Or Pitt/Cincy back in the day. A good tough BE team.

Tough team that won’t do squat in the NCAAT bc they get away with a ton more than what should be allowed. They would have been playing their 8-13 player a lot if this were an SEC game or many other conferences. Tennessee/ISU/Houston are similar but with better offense.

Also, Gold on MU is pretty horrid against any decent team.

Call me naive. I think the tougher game was the one we just won. I think we match up particularly well against this St John’s team. Pack the paint make the brick layers beat us from deep. They won’t be able to match our efficiency. I think we roll(knocks on wood).

On the road is definitely tougher, but we're not going to shoot 60% from 3 again.

Packing the paint has been the antithesis of our defense, so it would require a pretty big scheme adjustment. Hopefully we're able to institute it in this extra time off.

We definitely won’t. We also won’t turn the ball over 25 times or be out shot by 20 shots haha. I’m interested to see if Liam is limited at all

I hadn’t really looked at the SJU roster until now and I’m surprised they’re so good on the boards since they aren’t a big team. Zuby is listed at 6’9 240. Then Kadary, Scott and Luis are all between 6’5 205 and 6’7 215. Wilcher is the smallest. So We actually have a size advantage with Liam, AK and Reed.

The best rebounder of my lifetime is Rodman, he's 6'7. Barkley was the round mound of rebound, he's 6'5. Josh Hart gets 10 boards per game, he's 6'4. There's a lot more to rebounding than being tall and the Johnnies are great at rebounding the ball especially offensive rebounding.

Good point. I notice St. John's gets a lot of long rebounds, for example in the game against Marquette. Those have little to do with height and much more to do with hustle, toughness, and determination. We're going to need the tenacity Hurley talks about and to come out of the gate firing on all cylinders. Of course long rebounds are the result of missed jumpers, including 3's, so hopefully our hot shooting from the perimeter carries over from the last game, but when we and/or they miss we need to grab those rebounds.

St. John's stinks at 3 pt. shooting and free throws, but is a terror on the boards. Our boys better wear body armor and bring the fire. The little things will decide this game. St. John's doesn't overwhelm anyone (well, neither do we), but is gritty.

I used to play 1:1 with my friend a lot in high school and college. He's maybe 5'7" and I'm almost 6'2". He drove me crazy because he usually out-rebounded me by getting inside and just reading the misses off the rim. Fortunately, I was a very good three point shooter because I'd usually check the ball and knock down a three. :) He wore me out though.

A very entertaining game last night. Marquette does not look like a very good team and Pattino has done an incredible job. Really impressed with the poise displayed by the Johnnies, and of course their aggressiveness. Friday's will be a great game.

It’s their first meaningful game in many years. We have had 12 in the last 2 seasons. Not make or break for us but yes I want to kick their ass.

You’re just begging the universe to let St Jon’s shoot lights out from 3.

The Pitino factor is always a thing. They outplayed us in the first half in 23 when he was with Iona and I legit thought going in we could easily lose that game. The guy is an ubertool but he is an incredible coach. Everywhere he goes (except for the Knicks/Celtics) he turns the team into a power in very little time often with marginal talent. I like Shaka but I thought his gameplan was idiotic. I do not expect the same from Pitino.

I had no idea what this thread was even about from the title. Assumed maybe a new winter storm was coming at a time when we had a game. The Storm? What the hell is that? Have never heard St. Johns called that. Still the Redmen to me, but Storm, without Red? That's a mutant who controls the weather.

As for my thoughts: St. Johns teams that do not have Walter Berry, Chris Mullin and Mark Jackson are trash. They may win occasionally but they remain trash.
I thought this was about a snow storm too.

St. John's does not shoot well, but they attack the rim with intent and we foul a lot. Packing the paint will be tough especially since we have struggled with on ball defense and stopping penetration without fouling.

Traditionally, our guards have been good rebounders. There is a lot that goes into being a successful rebounder. Primarily, in my opinion step one is boxing out. Certainly, basketball IQ in understanding what kind of a shot went up and what the angles are. And then there is will and toughness.

Agree with you that rebounding is not solely about height. (Also, I had forgotten that Barkley is "only" 6'5". He definitely played much bigger.)

The fans were chanting “We want UConn” as the clock wound down at MSG last night. We need to go full Hurley on them.

Did You Know: St. John's opponents are bottom 10 in the CBB in Free Throw %?

St. John's has been incredibly fortunate opponents are missing free throws; they also cannot make free throws.

I think they adopt the Terrence Shannon gameplan from the Elite 8: if Kadary gets by you, just foul him. Make him earn every point at the foul line where he is shooting 49% from the line.
