They are coming in riding high with a lot of swagger, top 5 D and all that but their schedule was not that impressive. They can win shooting pathetically from 3. Yes they have won a lot on the road which is a credit, but this Tuesday they will host an amped up Marquette team coming off a home loss (yes!) with only 2 days to recover for us.

They are full of experienced players, transfers, trash talkers, but I dislike them and their coach and I want Pitino and his team to look glum after the game. It’s not make or break but I see this as a game of wills, who will fight for it more and coach Hurley is going to be quite jacked up for this.

I saw a decent amount of their game against PC yesterday. St John's can't score effectively or efficiently in a half court game. Once PC stopped turning the ball over they were able to erase a 19 point deficit.

If we exceed 20 turnovers as we did last night, we won't end up with the same result that we had against Marquette. We will need to protect the ball. If we do, I like our chances a lot.

Their interior defense is elite, but perimeter defense isn't as strong as their overcommitting can lead to open shots. On offense, think of Houston without the ability to make perimeter shots -- tons of second chance shots.

In summary, they are most suspectible against perimeter-driven teams, so UConn's strong shooting and volume from the perimeter will be an advantage. I really like our chances.

The concern here is that we are going to see a replay of Telfort in the Butler game. Give the ball to Richmond and have him back in whoever is playing him for a 4 foot turnaround or a hard drive to the basket and if our big has to rotate over, and easy offensive rebound for Ejiofor. The ability of St. John's to penetrate and back people down is what worries me. AK is gonna have to defend Richmond, not foul, and, in turn, UConn has to make Richmond defend. He is not a good 3 point shooter and typically is a lazy defender.

One thing with St. Johns, they go 9-10 deep, but all of their scoring comes from their starters. They really struggle to score from the bench....UConn's bench needs to give them a jolt and win the battle of the benches convincingly...

As a SJU fan this is what I will say about this SJU team. They don’t pass the eye test. Not in the least. Watch a game and you won’t really see where the stats come from. Box score at the end of the game has 7-9 guys with double digits amongst other lofty numbers. Somebody said “give Kadary his”. You can’t. Luis, Deivon or Ejiofor can get you badly in the right game. 3-pt shooting has sucked but believe it or not SJU isn’t as bad as it has shown this season. Pitino will attest. We have been poor there though and 3-pt defense has only been decent.

Defense is a lot better than it seems on TV overall though. It’s generally stifling for most teams. Athleticism a lot better as well. Even as a SJU fan I can’t believe where we are without seemingly elite offense etc. we are far from unstoppable, yet have been in solid command at most times.

That said, we should only have 2 losses the entire season thus far as Baylor was a clock/ref mistake and should be only 4 points from undefeated. Again, SJU doesn’t always pass the eye test. Team is big, fast, extremely deep and Pitino has them playing nasty defense. Looking forward to this week with some better Big East teams. See a bit closer where we stand.

They really only go 9-10 deep during blow outs.

In the Providence win, only six players played 6+ minutes. In the Xavier game, only six played 8+ minutes. Georgetown win, only the started played 11+.

They have been down some big numbers in games and come back. Also many of their wins are very close and could have gone either way,

Agreed. Not a great bench. UConn needs to put pressure on them to defend without fouling and hit the glass hard.

I had no idea what this thread was even about from the title. Assumed maybe a new winter storm was coming at a time when we had a game. The Storm? What the hell is that? Have never heard St. Johns called that. Still the Redmen to me, but Storm, without Red? That's a mutant who controls the weather.

As for my thoughts: St. Johns teams that do not have Walter Berry, Chris Mullin and Mark Jackson are trash. They may win occasionally but they remain trash.

We will need to win the rebounding stat. Can't give then to many second chances.

I’ve said this ad nauseum when it comes to Richmond but I’ll say it again. Sit on his right hand and force him left. He may eventually go left but not before multiple attempts to get back to his right hand.

Yup. The announcers mentioned it a few times the last St. John's game I watched. And then I keyed on it and it was obvious. Make him go left and he doesn't look comfortable or as effective. Then again I'm sure the UConn coaches knew this before and he still always kills us.

You know who else this defensive advice would have been good for? Jamiya Neal. He doesn't go left to go all the way to the basket. He will go left rarely and when he does it's with the intention to pull up, which he is not that great at doing going left. Yet Solo Ball and Jaylin Stewart didn't implement this knowledge. Hurley stated in one his press conferences that the players are not digesting the scouting report to the fullest extent.

OK you’ve been around the BE since they changed their name and mascot (which to this day you think what the heck is it?) right?. I guess it’s my bad for not spelling out “Red” or writing St. John’s but I’m guessing that with UConn and Storm in the title most people kinda got it… or 2 seconds later with the post.

Maybe call a time out and remind them? We have a tendency to repeat the same mistakes again and again.

I remember vividly watching courtside @MSG with Mike Jarvis was their coach, and when the game started they got a dose of UConn who was zipping the ball around so damn fast, they had no idea what to do on D. It's was crushing but fun as a UConn grad.

What I like is the game Friday is @Gampel Pavilion and that energy will go ballistic with a Solo Ball timely 3. Let Reed, Jr. get some fouls on their bigs, and let our 3pt shooting rise again. Then we play them @MSG which tends to feel like a home game anyway.

Motto: Flush the Johnny's!!!!

My primary concern is that Richmond will single-handedly foul out our entire backcourt. Dude is crafty and strong and most of our perimeter defenders are perpetually a step slow. I will be enormously annoyed if Dan Hurley doesn’t instruct our guys to play off him a bit and make him take jumpers.

Offensively inept teams don’t usually scare me but their O rebounding does exploit one of our biggest weaknesses. Need to box out instead of going for the block every time

That pressure they use is pretty solid and they attack the lane with speed and aggression. They also foul almost every second and dare the refs to call it. Hurley may get a lot of press over his antics but Pitino is up there.
