Duke Scouting Report

So, does anyone think Duke plays zone? It got them back in and the win against Sienna and SJU but UConn is kind of built to attack the zone IMO.

If I recall a few BE teams tried zone this year and UConn tore it apart by getting Solo, Mullins or Karaban to the FT line with the ball and getting Oboards. Those teams quickly came out of the zone.

The first time Karaban has an uncontested layup with no Duke players within 10 feet, they'll be in zone on the next possession.
 
One way to prepare for Duke is to treat it as if UConn is playing SJ. Where Boozer = Zuby, Evans = Mitchell/Hopkins, etc. or some variation. Duke, as we saw against SJ, can play as physical and gain the FT advantage, which SJ played against UConn. So our preparation to possibly play SJ, is equally applied to Duke. Having said that, they are obviously different rosters and the game will be difficult, as expected.

I think it's been stated multiple times he's here as long as we're alive.
 
Had this thought this morning. When Foster and big Pat are in the game, I think we need to look to run more. I want to see how both of them can hold up conditioning wise after playing a lot of minutes on Friday. I really expect Foster to not be the same player today. Big Pat is the wild card.

this doesn't make sense when boozer plays the 4 for duke.

Pat looked pretty rough against STJ. Not nearly the level of explosiveness, seemed to end up on the ground a lot. 36 hour turnaround is going to be a huge ask of him.

Foster is really important for them, but in this particular game, I think Big Pat is even more important. They don't have a lot of options for Reed. They don't want Boozer having to guard him for long stretches.
 
I really think Duke is going to feel the game out early, but will be playing a lot more zone than they even did against St. John's. It's the easy way for them to play against all our action on short prep and save Boozer from guarding Alex/Tarris straight up.

If that's the case, need to get Karaban, Mullins and Ball to the middle of that zone. I love that Luke had this prep. He will have plays drawn up to punish that zone.
 
Have not seen much tape on Duke-My bad. Do they ever play Boozer and Big Pat together? Or is it either or? Reibe could be a wild card today with some productive bench minutes.

Yes. They like to play Big Pat at the 5, and will bring Brown to play the 4/5 with Boozer when Big Pat goes out.

Okay…. My comment is talking about Pat, not the rest of the team. They (Duke) bottled up Zuby. Pat was not particularly good in the limited time he was on the court. He had a negative +/- , got pushed around, couldn’t stay on his feet, and didn’t really do much of anything. My comment had nothing to do with other players or team defense against Zuby.
 
Alot of talk about how Foster will look after 1 day of recovery playing on a broken foot, I'm worried about Silas. Noticed a limp a couple of times Friday after recovering from being screened, and we can see he only shot the ball as a last resort.

It's a real concern. I think the difference is we don't really need Silas to score. Need him to play defense and set up the offense when he is in. I think Duke needs Foster to score.

ehhh...we will need to shoot. losing a 40% shooter is not ideal.


Demary is a far better player than foster....and the delta between demary and smith is larger than the delta between foster and boozer (i.e. all duke's guards are mediocre....foster is just slightly MORE mediocre than boozer..or is it less mediocre? idk.)

Not sure how much they rely on Foster to score - Duke's weakness is the fact they get a large majority of their points from two players. Ngongba is their third leading scorer and he's limited.
 
We all know Cam Boozer likes to pump fake. The entire team does also. This article analyzes how much Boozer does it and how it benefits him. Can our guys not go for the pump fake and limit the fouls? Probably one of the keys to the game.

This analysis says half of Duke's baskets against SJU were some kind of pump fake. Stay grounded today!

Team did a great job not fouling Fears tonight when he's lived at the line all season, gonna have to do the same with Boozer on his takes to the rim. In the paint he's pump faking on every shot, stay home and keep vertical.

This is where AK being a smart positional defender and that 6'11" wingspan will come in handy. Boozer is gonna move him and put his shoulder into his chest, just stay vertical and make him shoot over you. He's gonna get his but they can make it difficult.

Out of curiosity, which of those did you think was a 3 second violation, because none of them are. The last clip comes closest but Ngongba fully enters the paint at 14 seconds on the shot clock and the shot goes up at 11 seconds.

Boozer is going to drop his 250lb shoulder and make space with AK.
 
The insight of Duke fans. There is a professor from UConn on the podcast who went to Duke talks about the fanaticism of UConn fans?

If you have a few seconds while waiting for the games today I’d take a listen. I thought it was funny when they mentioned that all of Duke‘s fans went to Duke and everybody that UConn fan represents nobody that went the school.

If his arms are even remotely not 100% vertical he'll foul out.
