Duke Post Game Thread

I was scared of him because every time I've seen Duke play he makes all their big shots. I also thought several of his comments during this tournament showed arrogance. He made his first couple shots against us and then did absolutely nothing the rest of the game.
I honestly didn't even realize he was in the game in the second half......complete non factor

So it sounds like Karaban interpreted it to be some kind of playful exchange with a cool ref who was more personable and friendly than most. Who knows. I could honestly believe that Dan does not even recall the interaction with all the emotions going through his mind in that moment. We may never know. ESPN today noted that the ref was left off the Final 4 team of officials implying it could have had something to do with that interaction.

How much is all of this publicity worth to UConn? People are still talking about it!
A ton. A loss and Uconn goes out this year without a whisper. The shot of the century happens and everyone is talking about it, Hurley & Mullins getting interviewed by everyone. It's amazing for March Madness too. Uconn brand has doubled down after the B2B with that shot.

I wouldn't be surprised if the official got left off because they wanted to avoid a lot of speculative anti-Hurley spitballing about something that's in reality a non-issue.

Colin Cowherd spent about 5 minutes talking, in the first portion of today's show, about the alleged bumping. He thought it was a bunch of whining by Duke losers on social media and had no merit. He did mention that Dan is a bit odd at times while showing the picture of his jacket off his shoulders and glasses off his face. Due to that and his passion he receives some unwarranted criticisms.

I have seen some comments on FB and social media calling Dan a POS human being. I can understand why opposing fans have issues with some of his antics with the officials and opposing fans, but that definitely carries it too far IMO. He sure is a polarizing figure.

Same people who would take him as their coach in a hot minute.

He's a villain - really one of the few left out there in sports. He's animated, passionate, authentic and doesn't care what you think.

I watched a CBS interview with Bob Sr. after the game which was posted on FB. He looks confused in this picture and he admitted that he thought the shot tied the game. He credits his wife for correcting him since she fully understood what was going on. And he thought Mullin's shot was a bigger shot than Laetner's against Kentucky.

The publicity, the emotion has been amazing. I must have watched the replay 100 times. I just hope Hurley has them refocused and ready for Saturday.

Malachi Smith reminds me so much of Johnny Gwynn. I love how Malachi is hanging onto Braylon and he won't let go

Gwynn was the microwave for one reason, he could come into a game and hit a bunch 17 foot jump shots which heated up our offense. Different type of player than Smith.

It was nothing, just raw meat for the Hurley haters to devour. We know how Hurley is, but they hate him so much they're desperate for anything to crucify him with and make viral. They buried him last year after spreading the clip of his cursing out the refs after the Florida loss. The Twitterverse & media are merciless.... and profoundly angry, obnoxious & stupid.

Here's what really happened from the coach himself:

I agree that this will provide quite a bit of positive exposure, but I hope 'UConn goes out this year without a whisper' was hyperbole.

Even if we didn't pull the game off, if for example we never got to within two baskets in the second half, getting to the regional final and losing to the overall #1 seed wouldn't be going out without a whisper.

I do wonder about you. How precarious do you believe our program's grip on national relevance is? From the tone of many of your posts it seems that you believe one less than stellar season would drop us to out of the top 100 or so programs in the country.

Just rewatched last few minutes. Couple of things I noticed which displayed how narrow this win was:
1. Mullins picked up his 4th foul with 5:50 left, and was in there on the pressure traps in the last couple of minutes swatting away at the ball.
2. Silas let the ball roll on inbounds a couple times saving about 10 seconds.

Have you seen viewership this year? They didn't appear in one game in the top ten this year. The Uconn brand has natural disadvantages. It's less about the program and more about the situation and how the college landscape is moving.

Events like this for the Uconn program are priceless.

Losing in the the Elite 8, versus winning like that and heading to the F4 = delta is massive. Do you think anyone is really going to remember Tenn, Purdue or Iowa? No one really counts Elite 8's, winning close or not.

Or St Johns.

St. John's got a huge boost from all the hype during the week leading up to the Duke game. Folks were coming out of the woodwork to talk up that game and make grandiose predictions about the Johnnies possibly winning a title. People might remember that one, at least for a while.

I meant as an emotional high energy guard coming off the bench, not necessarily statistics. Although I do think they are very similar players. Malachi actually has better numbers from 3
