Duke - NIL Dark Money | The Boneyard

Duke - NIL Dark Money

What a stupid article. This makes the lack of a singular high profile billionaire benefactor seem nefarious. It is what it is, this is the world we live in and Duke has always had deep pockets.

Well this answered a question I asked earlier. There is no cap on what the billionaires give these kids. So it is actually worse than pro sports from a competitive standpoint. I guess we should be googling who has the most billionaire alumni that is not an ivy league school.

A friend mentioned this morning that someone wasted $21m for nothing last night on something a lot of people were paying attention to. I pointed out to them that the "someone" could waste $21m every single day for the next 50 years and still have tens of billions left over.

A billionaire alum could match the $20m cap every single year and it wouldn't make much difference to their financial standing.

$21m per day is $7.665 billion per year, or $383 billion over 50 years. I'd like to know who is the billionaire who can afford to waste that? I might want to fetch him some coffee for $100k.

College sports are truly cooked if this continues. It’s basically gonna become European soccer where only 4-5 teams can compete for the ultimate prize. That’s already the case in CFB.

Exactly right. And with the current system there is no way to know what your payroll costs will need to be if you want to compete at the highest level. It's not sustainable over the long-term in my opinion, but at least for a while there is going to be a lot of money flying around and I suspect some parties that are going to get themselves into a lot of trouble.

Yup....

My suspicion is there is official NIL pay and then the “other” pay at a lot of these schools.

Someone has $444b. Not to mention what that $444b will earn over 50 years.

Yes I did the math on that with net worth of $20B it’s like a night in a hotel for the average American as far as annual financial impact compared to net worth.

Many of the top 20 richest people in America went to an Ivy, so we can expect the Ivy league to dominate in both Football and Basketball soon. It'll be just like it was 100 years ago.
The Ivy opted out of revenue sharing and NIL. Winning at sports is beneath the Ivy.

I actually kind of disagree with the CFB assertion here. What has happened the last few years is kids don't wait around at Georgia and Bama to finally crack their 2-deep. They go transfer where they can play.

Ohio St last year was certainly a very well paid team. But Michigan the year before did not have anywhere near the NIL spent. Their opponent in the game, Washington, same deal.

In many ways in CFB it's spreading some talent out around the power teams -- no longer does the SEC have the monopoly they used to.

I just hope college ball does not turn into the G league - except players get a lot more money. Sounds boring.

They've been paying under the table for decades.

Not the greatest comp. The premier league is the richest, most watched league in the world and only 5 clubs have a realistic shot at winning the title in a given year (about 15 can win the champions league in a given year)

Friend of mine played baseball for Alabama in the 90’s. I visited him one time and we went to a football game. I looked over and saw a bunch of Lexuses lined up in the parking lot and said “Oh this must be the wealthy alumni lot”. He said “No, that’s the players’ lot”.
