I wouldn't say were doomed. But it is kind of interesting that with all of UConn's success, particularly over the last 15 years, that somehow we don't generally seem to get into the same discussion that Duke, UNC, UK and even KU always seem to be in. The BE is appearing to losing stature with the departure of SU and even Pitt and WVU. The new teams don't bring all that much to the table for hoops notwithstanding Houston's recent success. And, to beat a crippled horse, it's never that easy replacing a "legend" coach, and with this little current dark cloud, the silver lining might be more like silver plate when it comes to keeping the place that JC has so well created. At this moment, it remains to be seen if we are more than a coach's program.
If, post JC, UConn manages to hire a coach who can come any near JC's success, then maybe we become more like UNC and Duke and less like other schools who never quite regain the mojo after the legend departs, even if they remain respectable. G, Town post the first John T has not been the same, St. John's totally went in the toilet after Carnesecca, Arizona is still finding its footing after Olson even with a well-regarded replacement. UCLA had as much going for it as any program after Wooden left, and was even reasonably successful right away except in the spoiled minds of Bruin fans. Great program, great university, good climate, lots to do. And even they no longer seem to be mentioned with the programs that everyone regards as constant contenders. Aghh, I think I'm just pissed and bored that I can't be on the golf course this week with the crap weather and a cranky back and am sitting here thinking about this. I'm still going to go to the games one way or another, even if they hire the water boy to replace JC.
