Good article from Borges. Figured I'd post it.

"I always tell him: 'Make it hard for your coaches to not play you. Make it difficult for them.' And I think he's done that," Marshall said on Saturday. "The coaches may think he can help us so we're going to play him. But there are a lot of coaches out there that say, 'He's practicing hard, in the gym, getting his reps, taking care of his body, doing all the right things. We can't leave him on the bench, he's got to play.' The one thing I think people lose with Danny Hurley is, we know about the championships, his energy is unmatched on the sidelines. He plays dudes. He plays guys who are going to help. Jaylin's one of those guys."

How former UConn star Donny Marshall has helped guide second cousin Jaylin Stewart: 'Such a good kid'

I do think Donny is on to something here. I think Stewart’s laid back demeanor makes it seem like he’s not locked in during his off nights, but makes him look like a cold blooded killer when everything is clicking.

For example, during the first half of the Villanova game, he came in and had a turnover off a lazy pass and then immediately committed a somewhat unnecessary foul. Danny subbed him out after like 1 minute. But then in the second half, he came in and was a huge part of the comeback. If he can convince the coaches that he’s ready to compete his ass off at any given moment, he’s a pretty hard guy to sit.

They are polar opposites. Stewart has one of the prettiest shots on the team and little to no defensive instincts for this level, while Donny showed up on campus a lockdown defender, while his three point shot, even as a senior, looked like Donny was throwing a punch.

Donny was great in transition and built like a fortress.

SuperJohn said it in a previous post, but Jaylin is one of the couple kids on this team that has an NBA body - he's long, strong and he's going to get stronger as you can see a frame that can put size on. He also feels really young, comes off as having that same goofy personality as Donny in some ways. He just turned 20, so played the majority of his freshman year as an 18 year old. I'm not sure I'd say his shot is pretty as it has no rotation, does have a nice release at his size. I really like Jaylen, see promise. When he's scoring, this team is so much more fun to watch and his flashes are some of the most aesthetically pleasing on the team. Just needs consistency upstairs. He'd be the kind of kid I can see making a leap into his Junior year.

Agreed. He is taking steps that indicate by next year he could be the guy. He does a lot of things well, and on the defensive end he does some visibly bone headed things but has had some of the best defensive games and individual plays that the team has seen all year. I love this dude if you couldn't tell

Fair point about the rotation, but every shot that leaves Stewart's hand looks like it is going in. Every shot that left Donny's hand had me wondering if they would need to stop play to repair the backboard.

It is a credit to Donny's hard work that he became a decent offensive player considering where he started as a freshman.

I remember Calhoun could not look when Donny was shooting free throws at times. But for his career he was just under 80% from the line. Maybe it was someone else .....

Donny seems like a nice dude who has a lot to say during the commentary on TV. Why is it people don't like him doing the UConn games ?I don't mind him, even if he tries hard not to be a homer.

wasnt him - he shot it 82% his last year, had a great stroke from the line

People just like to complain about everything. If you ask non-UConn fans what they think of his commentary during UConn games they'll say he's a big homer. Lose Lose for Donny, I've always liked him

Make it hard for your coaches to not play you.
It's good advice. I explained it that to my kids when they were very young. Ultimately, you control your own playing time by making sure your contribution can't be replicated by anyone else. Just be ready when your number is called and play hard. There will always be plenty of minutes for you.

I always liked Donny as a player. He could run like a deer and helped those teams with their transition. I believe he played soccer as a youngster which certainly helped. As nice as he seems, he could be tough as well. I remember him having to sit out a game for getting too physical the game before.

I'm sure that JStew can benefit from any advice that Donny provides.

The word consistency gets used frequently in regards to the players and the team this year. Indicates that patience is needed, but the time for patience is getting short. Can't say that it feels like we are going to gel. Hoping it is going to be one of those light bulb moments. How many team catch fire in the tourney and perform well above what the regular season shows? We gotta make the tourney, light bulb moment for this team could be a deep run.

I’d say patience where it’s clear upside is there, because you see moments. Jaylen qualifies, others do not.

On the whole and not for the OAD or TAD, players increase from Soph to Junior more than frosh to Soph - Solo is an exception, but Stewie and Ross and Singare are more the rule. Let's see how Stewart grows for his Junior year and hope Solo keeps that trajectory.

Heading into this season we thought JStew was going to be the next sophomore to make the big jump… hasn’t been the case (yet). You can see moments where he breaks away but he’s holding himself back a bit. if it’s a confidence the staff should try to get that kid’s self-esteem in working order

He provides long winded commentary after ever play, it becomes exhausting to many viewers. The criticism is valid.

He is very good on pre-game and halftime shows.

I'll be honest. I got nothing from this article or from Donny's advice to him. I like him, I'm pulling for him but my expectations and ceiling for him are very limited and conservative right now.

Both Ross and Stewart did nothing over a 5 week span to show any consistency or improvement when McNeeley was out. That doesn't sit well with me and don't see anything in their play, stats or demeanor to believe that lightbulb magically flicks on.

Could be the guy who does what???? Play D? hit from 3 consistently? guard somebody? Stop jumping on pump fakes? I hope that this kids proves me wrong, but I am selling Stewart stock, at least as it relates to him "being the guy".

Could be the guy who, like many college players, takes a huge leap in his 2nd year of real time. He could be the guy we go to for the final shot. And the guy we look to avg near dbl dbl. And the guy who knows the offense and defense. He has the build and the fire and the athletic ability. My "buying" is not changed by your wanting to sell. Go ahead and sell on J Stew.

I think we’ll probably find out what the staff really feels on Stew after the season. He’s a kid that I feel will want to start, so it will be interesting to how they retain if not given that level of confidence (assuming AK gone). If they hit the portal for a 4 and recruit over, not sure he’s sticking as a West Coast kid.

Good call. Also, the next 7-15 games we have left will add a lot to what will happen with him. As the go to bench guy i think they have faith in him.
