This is scary. No more Germans, please. JC hasn't exactly had a lot of success with German players (or many other foreign players for that matter) over the years and the last thing we need is more projects unless he's found the next can't miss Dirk Nowitski.

I've been meaning to start a thread for a while but I'll comment here instead. Whatever happened to the Israeli Connection from the early '90's (Nadav Henefeld, Doron Sheffer, Gilad Katz, Uri Cohen-Mintz)? We had an Israeli player every year from 1989 to 1994 (with varying degrees of success) and then none since. I've heard that Howie Dickenman was the mastermind of this pipeline and when he left UCONN, this link dried up.

Yeah, Gilad Katz & Uri Cohen-Mintz contributed so much more than Giffey has.

Um, thus my comment about varying degrees of success.....If you are having to compare Giffey to the poor play or Katz and Cohen-Mintz to find a bright spot, we're in even a deeper hole than even I thought. How about comparing him to Nadav and Doron?

mike bradley couldnt get on the floor in two years...hopefully calhoun doenst sign any more americans

So, you're using 6 players in over 20 years to determine UConn hasn't had success with kids overseas?

That's what we like to call a small sample size.

Even if Bradley decides to return JC will need 1 or 2 more frontcourt players for next year. Hopefully these will be players who can improve over the years like Hilton,, Gavin, or Travis etc. rather than another Mandledove or Darius Smith.
BTW, with an expanded role next year, I look for that solid improvement from Giffey.

Six kids my . Throw in Suhr, Justin Brown, Ajou Deng, Ater Majok....the best foreigner JC has gotten to produce was Denham Brown.....and Thabeet. Not saying there's never been any decent players, just few and far between.

At this rate he might not....be careful what you wish for.

Bradley Hayes or Obepka has an optimal situation right now to jump in and start at a high major program, especially for Hayes since he wants to stay for 2+ years. I think these next few months of recruiting and turning the page are immensely important in determining whether we will be considered respectable or a laughing stock.

"Getting" more comfortable? Those familiar with Calhoun-speak realize that's not exactly a ringing endorsement. I imagine JC isn't thrilled about the AD's lack of enthusiasm for the "coach-in-waiting" concept.

Or, those still pining away for Hathaway and still sore about him being fired could be reading too much into one quote out of context.

Whatever it means, it is surprising to me that JC and Manuel took what seemed like a long time to meet and begin to work out how they will work together. It was no accident that Manuel was hired by Herbst without JC being on the committee, giving input. I know that was around the time JC was not feeling well (not sure how those things overlapped). I think that Manuel needs to work with Calhoun, but he also needs to be the AD with authority to function in that role (a role that includes being Calhoun and Auriemma's boss). Not an easy role to fill. Good thing that he's 6'6" and over 300 lbs! Bigger than internet Fishy, even. I could see Calhoun walking over a lot of people starting off in that job. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at those meetings.

I'm taking it as a good sign that Calhoun said that he and Manuel have been having extensive discussions on several subjects, including the future of the program. My sense was that he did not have those types of discussions with Hathaway, ever.

Good point.....great that it is happening. Their ability to work together will likely have a lot to do with how the post-JC transition goes.

Hopefully we can find a Jake Voskuhl type kid... somebody who can be a space eater in the middle that does the little things and doesn't want to be a scorer....

What input did JC have with this hire? It looked like he had zero input.

The only important point to recognize and conclusion to draw is that JC does not seem put off in the least by the challenges facing the program; and we all know, historically, that he not only relishes challenges but has been spectacularly successful in dealing with them. He was never put off by the "hasn't won the big one" label many in the media tried to paint him with until '99 when we made the Krapascrewdookski family cry; and led the Puke chief to make that now infamous post-mortem comment, "I don't coach for wins. I coach for relationships." And it has been a great ride that will not be stopped by this NCAA nonsense. We will land on our feet; and he will pass the program off in good shape when he decides ride off into the sunset(John Wayne reference here). ;)

GO HUSKIES!!!

You don't seem very bright, so I will work with you. This wasn't "one quote out of context", it was Calhoun-speak. And in Calhoun-speak, getting more comfortable means "not comfortable".
