Does Mark Daigneault belong on the wall as a Husky of Honor?

If he donates name a cafeteria after him. Or some food item. When i was at uconn they had something called "o'brien potatoes" never heard of them before or after. possibly named after uconn assistant soccer coach Carey o'brien. Who apparently likes potatoes.
Can't tell if this is a joke or not.

No, but UConn gets to woof about launching his coaching career here. I can see the cover of UCONN Magazine in his future. Maybe they can put together a fundraiser with Mark as the honoree/keynote speaker.

He has achieved something that is very rare indeed. He got his coaching start under JC at UConn and maintained a relationship with him through his entire coaching career. Calhoun (and Coach Blaney) helped him get his first job on the Holy Cross staff.

Daigneault is as much of a UConn product as any past player. This is his basketball cradle. He is an alum. I think he should be invited back, celebrated, and put on the wall.
Nope, just UConn players and coaches. He never coached here.

Is this some kind of joke?
What the heck did he do for UConn?
This summer is going to be awful......................................................

Here's the pro side. Every school celebrates the accomplishments of their alumni as they achieve in the post graduate world. Whether it is success in business, government, athletics, music, art, etc.

We just had an alum reach the very pinnacle of the basketball coaching profession. And UConn was the springboard for his career, he learned his first basketball in Storrs. And what if he wins another one?

BTW, Calhoun is on the wall (and should be).
Thanks. I figured he might be. Makes 100% sense for him to be.

So how long before Hurley is up there? Does his time at UConn have to be done before he can go up there? Not sure what the requirement on that is.

Would Rip and Caron be on the wall for winning an NBA Championship if they had an Andre Drummond type of career at UConn? No way.

Remember that Daigneault was a low level assistant at UConn. He didn't actually have much to do with the success of the program. Maybe a tiny bit but not much. What if he was an alum of UConn, was never involved with the basketball team at UConn, and won an NBA Championship. Would you still have the same idea to put him up on the wall because he graduated from UConn?

I appreciate your suggestion but it's a hard no. Have him back to campus, honor him some how, have him speak to the team, but no way on the wall.

Did you really just compare Mark Daigneault to Jim Calhoun?
I think he was just responding to my post where I asked if Calhoun was up there because I wasn't sure. I don't think he was trying to compare the two.

IMO he deserves a little showcase in Werth. This is an accomplishment very few schools can connect to, and showing the breadth and success of UConn beyond the Storrs campus is a big deal.
This is the correct answer. Maybe not a husky of honor nod, but SOMETHING that showcases the winning culture that surrounds uconn.

While I wouldn't be opposed to something to honor his accomplishment, I think we should remember that he was a student manager at UConn. Don't think he was anything higher than that there. So even though he is a UConn alum, he had more to do with coaching at Holy Cross and Florida than at UConn.

Before reading the thread... I've decided it's gotta be a "no."

There's already a name or two up there that probably shouldn't be. Let's not cheapen the honor.

Definitely second these ideas; create a showcase in the practice facility, invite him to be honored at a game, see if he’ll volunteer some time at a practice this off season, and generally see if he’s interested in being around the program more moving forward. We should definitely be pursuing this relationship further, he’s going to be very successful.

Thunder are also more stable than most franchises. But track record for nba championship coaches ain’t good. Nick Nurse, Frank Vogel, Budenholzer, Malone all fired with two years of a title. Mazulla on a short leash in Boston.

Tough sport. Maybe he can be future head coach here.

I know next to nothing regarding Mazulla and the Celts but I always got the impression he was well liked up there. With the Tatum injury he is playing with house money next year.

You would be wrong there. Fans hate the style of play, his weird timeouts and demeanor and the incessant 3s.
Not everyone. He does have a title to his credit. But sports radio up here incessantly discusses what you mentioned so there is some loud opinions that wouldn't mind seeing him gone. Especially after the early flame out in the playoffs this year.

Mazzula is a weirdo and I tend to think he’s a “right place at the right time” guy, but I can’t imagine firing a coach who’s won a title and continues to make the playoffs. He’d have to completely lose the locker room or Tatums support if I’m the owner.

Hard to believe a motivated individual with a great hoop IQ did not contribute significantly during his tour as a team manager. Now that he has reached a pinnacle in the NBA - I see no reason that he should not be honored. I like being associated with high acheivers.

Maybe make him win 3 more, then it would be OK.
