Courant did a good job a few weeks ago laying out the timeline.

Basically shows what happens when foundations aren't properly managed and why they need professional oversight.

Over $1.5 million unaccounted for, no kids receiving scholarship money, annual fundraisers and charity events cancelled and no one can (or will) explain it.

Original article with the background and history.

And Jacobs' column on it today.

We had a similar problem this year where I live. A local VFW commander squandered over $250K set aside specifically for the upkeep of a city park that has memorials for multiple wars and service recognitions. Not a single record to retrieve short of a few cocktail napkins with hand-written promissory notes.

This happens more than people think. I took over a swim team after a small impropriety was discovered, a dinner event for the board. When I started, there less than 500 in the bank account and many, many missing items. When I left 3 years later we had over 5k available although we had spent a significant amount on various upgrades. The people I replaced could not have been nastier. I often wonder what happened to the money before me.

Unfortunately, this is why a lot of people don't like to donate money to random nonprofits that aren't very clear about the % of money going to the intended folks in need.

We all remember Ray Allen's mother blowing 90% of incoming money on parties and "fundraising" events.

This is the daughter of the man. Not the man.

I suppose that everybody wants to tread lightly, and not talk plainly about what more than likely happened.

The daughter is playing dumb. Saying things like, "people don't know what I've been through."

Nonsense. What likely happened is that this woman was put in charge of money that could directly benefit her, just like Ray's mom. She could be the queen bee at the party, fundraiser, whatever. Order and eat whatever foods she wanted. Hire the happening DJ, whatever.

Certainly she knew exactly what she was doing, assuming she had a 7th grade math education. She knew she was depleting the funds of the organization. She knew there would be a day of reckoning. But she was enjoying the lifestyle too much.

Was there malevolence involved? No. But there was probably greed and selfishness.

I see these types of things every few weeks.

Had one recently. Elderly woman's daughter, who was living with her, had POA and essentially spent every dime of the woman's money. She then dropped dead of morbid obesity, leaving her elderly mother with nothing. Did she do it to harm her mother? No. She simply couldn't resist her own selfish greed.

I guess my point is that the "nice" way of viewing these sorts of things is that there was "incompetence" and "inexperience" and "lack of professional oversight."

Nah. It's just greed. And selfishness. All while understanding that it will end some day and it will end badly.

But the national economy is doing the same thing, with a majority consent in America, so we shouldn't be angry with this woman for doing exactly what our country is doing.

Shame, like most people from the North end who played sports I knew Doc. He was one of best all around athlete ever to come out of Weaver HS and latter on was a highly respected football and basketball referee. He took control of Weaver HS when discipline was out of control. Nobody messed with Doc. His memory deserves better than this.

Yea...this happens all the time and is one reason why NY just toughened up their tax exempt org governance requirements. Very unfortunate because as someone said above, things like this are why people are hesitant to give money to charities.
