Do we go after Cole Cloer or Focus on Transfers?

If Will Wade leaves NC State for LSU, do we go after Cole Cloer?

  • Yes, high-upside wing fits modern UConn roster building, Never pass up on shooters

I almost got sucked in but then I remembered that I am already tired of reading wish lists and the offseason hasn't started yet.

Plus UConn men's basketball win tonight to give me two more days of it not yet being the offseason.

I was assuming Braylon stays. Not trying to spark that debate right now so everyone reading this: let’s just wait until after the season lol

If we need to fill that spot then I’d look to the portal and have Solo/Ross/Cloer/transfer compete for those minutes. Wouldn’t want to just swap Braylon with a less good freshman at SF, especially since not having size or defense at SG/SF has been an issue this year
Who is the less good freshmen at SF? Landrew? He’s also a 5* and makes Mullins look like a choirboy by comparison. he’ll be battling it out with Ross for starting SF

Assuming everyone’s back like we’re supposed to, we have 3 needs at the moment: secondary CG, starting PF, and backup C.

Demary / Transfer
Mullins / Ball
Ross / Landrew
Transfer / Stew
Reibe / Transfer

A secondary CG would overlap with the roles currently held by Mullins and/or Ball but would be a better fit in the rotation...Cloer would fill the backup PF role but that’s currently held by stew...

Count me in the camp that doesn’t think Reibe is penciled in as a starter. Not sure you can play a big that doesn’t rebound or stand up to any real physicality more than backup minutes. Think it’s a recipe for disappointing season.

I’m hoping we decide to go all in for one of the top portal centers. Or at least a Michigan Reed type that really competes with Reibe for the starting job.

I swear I think some of your enjoy the off season then the actual season.

To each their own I guess.
It’s because the transfer portal has given college basketball a free agency period similar to MLB, NFL, NBA. It’s like a bonus season. Very enjoyable and has given us months of extra activity.

Ironic when your hot takes are the epitome of a pointless exercise
Hot takes are where it's at. Roster posturing when it's a massive guessing game this early is impossible. We don't know who is staying or going, and each/every player is a significant domino. I get it at a high level, but it's impossible to drill down on an individual player level.

We know we need a few roles for sure, no matter what happens. Until the portal opens and we know what the full menu is, it feels way premature.

Desperately need a couple of 6-9, 6-10 scorers. Strong, athletic, players who dunk like it's a natural reaction to being on the floor. They definitely need a co-partner for Reibe. A back up PG would be nice, but UConn has got to get more athletic, rugged and natural scorers. Stop trying to replace Mullins with a clone. Besides, Mullins need more time at this level. Hell, maybe UConn can McNeeley back.

As a State fan who follows closely (but def not an insider by any stretch), I’d be shocked if Cloer followed Wade.

He grew up a Wolfpack fan, his family are all Pack fans. I think Wade energized things in Raleigh and made Cloer believe State could win at a higher level than they had been at recently. But I don’t think he committed to Wade specifically, more of the idea of Wade was going to win at State.

With how ugly the exit was at State I highly doubt he’s following him to LSU. He’ll either remain at State or open it back up to a full on recruitment.

My wishlist:

1. Murauskas
2. Hines from SHU (if he enters portal)
3. Wilkins (if he enters portal)
I would love to have Hines, but Hurley has been open about not poaching from other Big East teams. Considering his relationship with Holloway I think a guy like Hines is especially off limits.

I've thought since Wilkins came out with balls of steel against us in the tournament he would be a great addition and we may have a really good shot at getting him as he's from MA. However if he does enter the portal his list of suitors will likely allow him to look for a starting role at another high major program. He's likely coming off the bench here so would that be acceptable to him and his camp? Depends on who pursues him and how they weigh the pros and cons of each option, I think.

Murauskas looks like the top prize of the portal. Obviously it's early and we may see many more entries but I think he will remain near the top of the best transfer lists regardless. Have heard rumblings he will follow his coach but I really, really want him here as many others do.

A physical type who could shoot, rebound and drive, like either of those Michigan State guys, Cooper and Kohler. They are seniors, but I am talking a player type. Big Twelve has lots of those types of guys who develop slowly over the years and peak as Juniors. Danny Wolf Light players.

I agree with what many are commenting about the 5 spot for next season. I think Reibe is going to be a tremendous player next year. Pretty sure he missed out on the whole 2 summer sessions of S&C this past year, him and Furphy both as they were playing for their respective national teams most of the summer. I think they both stay in camp this summer and build their basketball bodies. For Reibe the focus should be getting him to play with more force, more aggressiveness, so he needs to be both stronger and somewhat quicker. He has an excellent skillset, great hands, and a real feel for the game. I'm sure his defense, shooting and scoring will be a focus.

At the same time we do need the best center we can get in the portal and they will have the opportunity to come in and compete for the starting position. This could be an experienced transfer, a European player, or a player ready to make a jump like Hines from Seton Hall, but that guy is from Jersey so maybe he stays where he is. I just read that he was the New Jersey player of the year coming out of high school so Shaheen did well keeping him in-state.

It’s impossible to run the preseason rankings at this point pre portal and draft announcements, but all these teams still in it will be losing the vast majority of their top players. The only team that feels like they will have a decent chunk of key players back is Florida. We look to be in very good shape as well.

A foundation of Silas, Ball, Reibe, with Ross, Stewart, Furphy, with the freshman is a good start. Mullins could possibly be back. But this is for another day...

LMAO. IIRC you don’t think we’re in good shape NOW, with Reed and the easily replaceable captain Karaban.

Very much for another day, but always a fun conversation. Right now the top teams this year that feel like they can roll back some good portion of their teams are Florida, Illinois. Duke, Ark and USC bringing in classes of 3 five stars each.

As a whole, I don't sense the field is going to be anywhere as good as this year. I'm expecting a significant drop off in quality given this freshmen class. Lot's of talent graduating, leaving for the draft. Purdue, St John's seeing lot's of upperclassmen go. There are no Yaxel's or Stirtz's coming out of mid majors this year that I see.

If you do not like Reibe this year i would wonder about you. A off season getting bigger and with his experience this year he will a very good player as a sophomore. He will be a good 3pt shooter stretching out the defense.
