I mean, in this day and age, what's in it for them?

They typically have received a decent swag package from the bowls... There isn't any required additional compensation, but individual players may or may not have clauses in their NIL deals. That would be a way to incentivize bowl participation though...

I just don't think most modern P4 athletes want to play a bowl game against a g5 opponent "for the team"; It's "you suck" if you lose and "sposed to" if you win. Kind of the opposite of a win-win.

They should be offering bonuses in the contract for players that play in the bowl game, if you don't play you don't get the bonus. Kind of like a holiday bonus if you wanna work during the holiday or take the time off and you won't get the bonus, this shouldn't be hard to figure out.

Yep, like it or not, they are professionals now. Nobody's trying to win one for the Gipper.

This what's in it for me mentality is gross. If it's only about the money for these kids now then it's time to tune out, I don't think that's the case.

I understand that feeling, share it to a degree. But in fairness, some of these kids have a lot more to lose than a football game. How much do they have to risk for my entertainment? You know, they still call it college football but it's barely that if it is at all.

Are NIL payments taxable ?
Oh yes. Federal and State income tax and self-employment tax to the tune of 15.3% as independent contractors. They can also deduct expenses like travel to public appearances, marketing, professional services...
