i hope so. I love the energy he brings. Anyone know if he spent his injured time shooting 1000 threes per day? ;)

I want him as close to the rim as possible. If he never takes a 3, that would be fine.

Ha. Given our inside play and lack of shooters, I’d say we are both spot on.

He has warmed up with the team a few times - once in sideline sweats

I would respect the decision to redshirt him again, but I think Diarra could be really important for this team. I want a lob partner for Jalen off the pick-and-roll. We need more athletes in the front court. More blocks and dunks please!!

That's not how it works.
Can he not apply for another year of eligibility due to injury if he has to sit out all year? Sorry, I may not fully understand the NCAA's rules here.

Generally, a student athlete is allotted 5 seasons in order to play 4. What you are describing is an injury waiver, which must be approved by the NCAA. It is not guaranteed.

Got it. So if Diarra is capable of playing this year, he should. Good to know, thanks! Hope he can make it out there.

But it's possible. Waivers for various reasons do happen as we know maybe not for Uconn. Didn't Herron get some kind of waiver to play immediately.

That's not at issue. Generally, the redshirt is an automatic. But depending on the reason for the redshirt, a medical waiver may not always be granted.

In Diarra's case, it was a medical redshirt, but he would have to exhaust all of his initial eligibility before applying and there is still remains no guarantee it is granted.

From the Journal Inquirer:

UConn forward Mamadou Diarra, who has yet to play this season because of recurring knee problems, went through an intense warmup with his teammates before the game. It appeared as if the 6-foot-8 sophomore from Putnam Science was getting ready to play against SMU.

Alas, Diarra returned to the court just before tipoff without his uniform and sat on the bench as usual. Hurley said after the game that Diarra may do that in some games but that doesn’t indicate he is any closer to a return to action.

FWIW, the guys on the Tulane call were saying that Diarra was questionable to play this afternoon.

All that is true. Rarely do they not grant waivers to kids with legitimate injuries that keep them out full seasons. By the same vein, Gilbert could probably get one if he so desires.

Bear in mind neither could apply for the waiver until all their current eligibility has been used up.

I'm in favor of playing the kid this year if he can go. There's no guarantee he'll be healthy enough to go 3 more years anyway. And this team needs help immediately.
