Dishin & Swishin Podcast: Matthew Mitchell & Kentucky are ready for the SEC and a national champions

On the social media service Twitter ESPN commentator Rebecca Lobo and Indiana Fever coach Lin Dunn discussed and debated the perpetual success of teams like UConn and Tennessee, and whether that is good for women’s college basketball. UConn coach Geno Auriemma has for years said that it is incumbent on the “other teams” to bring their programs up to the level of the Huskies and the Lady Vols, not legislate their programs down.

In Lexington, Kentucky, the Wildcats are striving to do just what Auriemma suggested. A historic men’s program at Kentucky helped to establish a surging women’s program under seven-year head coach Matthew Mitchell. After two years of mediocrity and a 33-32 start, Mitchell’s teams have embraced his “forty minutes of dread” up-tempo system on both ends of the court. The results have been spectacular.

How about that Baylor game Friday night?

As exciting as the Baylor game was, it's hard to showcase that as good basketball. The defense was porous, team offense sparse (16 assists, when playing 60 minutes and scoring 133?), and foul-happy to boot. Now, I'm not saying that KY won't win the SEC - I hope they do. Given their performance the past few years, I wouldn't argue that they're not an Elite 8/Final 4 team (tho', as we all know, so much depends on the bracket). I do think there's a big drop from UConn/Duke/ND down to the next tier, which is where KY is - and, will be, until they can make "40 minutes of dread" out of "60 minutes of pretty dreadful".

I've said it before and I'll continue to say it until Kentucky proves otherwise. Kentucky has got to recruit and elite post player or forward before they'll win a National Championship.

Ms. Walker looked potentially like a quintessential power forward. Not much development there; maybe went backwards.
