According to the list of top 10 single-game scoring outputs, #6-10 were 42 points. And every game on that list was vs bad teams. Kemba in 2011 is the most recent game other than Donyell in 93-94, so we're really talking about very, very few times 40+ points has been achieved. I remember Amidah with 40 against Coppin but not many others.

So could he have set the record for most points vs a top 10 team? I don't know where to find this kind of info. @tcf15 might know?

The school record and a story about the record holder:

.

And here is the answer to your question on most points scored and against what team. Bouknight's scoring 40 against a top 10 team, and doing that shooting over 50% is monumental IMHO.

I was also wondering if he scored the largest share of points in a UConn game.

Also would be curious if he holds the record for the highest shooting percentage in a 40 point game

My brother and I had a similar conversation earlier today. He was saying how it was reminiscent of Kemba putting up 42 against Vermont, so we started wondering who (if anyone) has dropped 40 on a top 10-15 team. I’m not savvy enough to find the answer (without wasting even more hours of my work day), so I’m glad you put this question up to the board. I’m curious to know where his performance stands historically.

Ok, based on my findings...

Nobody at UConn has ever scored 40+ against a top 10 opponent until James Bouknight did it on Sunday.

Prior to Bouknight's 40 against #9 Creighton:

The most points against a top 10 opponent was Ray Allen with 36 against #1 UCLA in 1995 NCAA Tournament.

The most poins against a top 10 opponent during the regular season was AJ Price with 36 against #8 Marquette in 2009.

The most points against a top 11-25 opponent was Chris Smith with 37 against #17 St. John's in 1992.

Who did Donyell score 42 against? I sorta remember Seton Hall... maybe?

He made it look easy at times yesterday. Some ridiculously athletic plays
I showed buddy who only watches pro ball the highlights and he’s like “wow there wasn’t a single easy basket, every shot was contested. I’ve never seen that before in a 40 game.”

Does anyone have numbers on our fast break points against Creighton? I don't think their was a lot.

Brimah scored most of his buckets on transition dunks. Donyell scored a ton of transition buckets in general. Those early 90s teams ran very well. I dont remember enough details on how Chris Smith scored the bulk of his. I'm sure he had his share of transition buckets.

Bouk on the other hand scored 40 almost exclusively in half court sets.

I don't think this will show up in the stats ever, but its impressive.

And you dound it in 17 minutes no less!

That's a hell of an accomplishment from a 20 year old. I look forward to James's face on the wall of the practice center next season.

a side note, I saw a guy jack up 39 against the Huskies, post-season, but it seemed like much more because most came in the 2nd half. You know who it was.

You realize you posted the same link I did and didn't actually answer the question?
Clearly, since the other UConn top scorers historically did not register their totals against top 10 teams if you look at those teams, the link which, yes I overlooked , answers the question for you.

Unless, St. John's was a top 10 team at the time.

It doesn't answer the question though. The top 10 were 42+. Bouk scored 40. So what you posted wasn't relevant because you didn't provide the information needed to make the determination. There very well could be 41 and 40 point games vs tip 10 teams. Look towards what TCF posted for something that actually answers the question.
