I know that Hurley has said that Hassan is “banged up” but is there any info on what injury he is dealing with? He was wearing a brace on his right leg during the DePaul game. Is it his knee?

I don't have any information, but the last game, it sure looked like a knee.

It doesn't look like it is possible with the schedule, but I think Hurley would love to have a big 2nd half lead in a game and let Mahaney and Nowell finish it out and get Diarra more of a rest.

It would be really difficult considering that Nowell has been available for maybe five out of the last 15 games, and is not available tonight.

Knee. I posted about it earlier this week before the DePaul game.

Hurley said freshman Ahmad Nowell will not be available after he suffered an ankle sprain in practice on Monday, and Hassan Diarra has had some practice time off as well to deal with knee soreness and general wear and tear that has come with his rise in minutes.

“He’s a warrior, he’s giving you everything he’s got out there every single night,” Hurley said. “And he’s played through it, you could see him in the Xavier game, he was limping a little bit out there and just struggling a little bit physically. But he’ll play hurt, he’ll battle for you. He’s a UConn man.”

If Nowell was available I think we could squeak by with him and Mahaney at the point for a game or two to let Diarra heal. But unfortunately we need him right now.

Thanks! Sorry, I missed that. I haven't been here as much lately. It seems like whatever the kids have had at school, I end up with, too. The one exception is a nasty flu... knock on wood. That has kept kids and teachers out for 7-10 days in many cases.

This feels like a game we are really going to need good minutes from Mahaney. I’m guessing he gets more time than usual.

I still think back there in Hurley’s head he’s ok with a loss here and he may use it as an opportunity to test some things, especially with a similar profile coming up next with StJ.

This one will be tougher to Mahaney. Xavier and DePaul are not good defensive teams. Marquette on the hand will pressure with their guards with the goal of forcing deflections to result in steals and other kind of turnovers.

Words of wisdom. They could have used Mahaney. Unfortunately his three fouls in first half and unforced turnovers prevented much playing time.

But now it looks like Ross can bring the ball up. He needs to make quicker decisions on inbound plays and needs to make his free throws.

In the times Nowell has played he has not impressed but my question is this, is that because of his physical condition or his lack of size against bigger guards? He could dominate at the HS level but this is a different animal in the BE.
At full strength is he better than Mahaney?

I would say just inexperience is his issue.

I actually thought he gave us some good minutes before the shoulder injury. He's struggled in BE games, but I think the talent is there.

Having a little break here is going to do wonders for everyone. Good timing.

Reserve guard Ahmad Nowell has his own ankle problem that has kept him out for two games. Hassan Diarra had five points and seven assists in nearly 25 minutes Saturday while playing through a leg issue.

"We can't afford to have him hobbling around like that," Hurley said.

"I think we're going to come into the next game looking a lot healthier," Hurley said.

Injury was so apparent last night. Kam getting to the basket at will just does not happen against a full strength Diarra. He gutted it out when he team needed him though. No one can question his toughness.

Just curious how intense Hurley goes with Diarra in practice this week. Does he rest him, with all these days off?

It cannot be the usual intensity that's for sure. The fact that Diarra is a 5th year senior helps and doesn't make the intense practice as necessary.

Granted, but will his size against guys at least 3-5” taller be a factor?
I don't think it's as big a deal in college as it is in the NBA where the average player is much bigger. We've had plenty of shorter guards - Kemba, Bazz, Boatright, El-Amin, etc. - who did just fine. Would it be better if Nowell was 6-3 or 6-4? Of course it would. But he's also very strong and built well. He'll be fine.

Got to, no choice. Rather a fresh healthy athlete who didn't practice than a less than 100% 5th year senior who is still gimpy from running plays and defending in practice. Hass knows what to do and how to do it. His body needs to be able to do those things full speed.

If Diarra doesn't practice one minute this week, it wouldn't bother me one second.
Let him rest evert second he can between games forntje rest of the season.
Nowell is injury prone this season and Mahaney is anyone's guess each game.
Yesterday's game looked a lot like what I saw of Mahaney in StM's loss to Grand Canyon last year. That GC team was filled with speed and athletecism, and he went 5-21 from the field and was chronically run past defensively.

Mahaney in 2.75 seasons worth of stats shoots 40% from the field. He had a suprisingly good freshman year that helps those averages a lot. This year and last years averages look a lot alike at 38% from field, 35% from 3. These are not numbers you really need on a roster at 2G. In his defense, Calcaterra shot about the same in college and then came to Uconn and shot 45% from three as a bench piece as he found a role that really worked for him.

Hass is a super vet who has been through the battles, you trust he will be ready for gamedays let him rest. I say Hurley runs Ross through starting pg reps in practice, think he can do the job even if it's just for a 2-4 minute segment each half.
