I'm not going to email him because I've done that before and he's almost gone off the deep edge. Instead I'll ask this simple question here, if someone can answer it than great. If Dez sees it and responds even better

Why would you tweet this...

Offensive coordinator George DeLeone says report untrue. That he is NOT going to the #NFL's Giants #UConnFootball

After this?

Sources: UConn OC George DeLeone Heading To The NFL’s Giants? Post original url/VEKqVJ

Doesn't a good reporter validate a story before reporting?

EDIT: apparently he started to go off the deep end, read through today w's tweets. Guy is about as sensitive as a 4 yr old. https://mobile.twitter.com/desmondconner/tweets

The guy was reporting what he heard from sources, and it turned out the sources were wrong. Part of the game.

I was thinking the same thing.

No two ways about it - this was pure s*** reporting.

He reports that DeLeone is going with such specificity as to name the person on the Giants that he would be replacing. Tonight, he says he spoke to GDL and GDL says that he is not going to the Giants. Was the original story garbage? Did something change? What changed?

And, ignoring those elephants in the room, ideally there would be a follow-up question - "Well, are you returning to UConn?" After that, "Are you returning as offensive coordinator?"

But, unless that's coming in a fuller report still to come this evening, he's failed his readership from the tip today.

I think Dez learned how dangerous twitter can be today. If he tweeted on one source, shame on him. If he tweeted based on two sources, he should tell all.

to say that DCs report on this situation pure s*** is a bit harsh... At least dude went to the horse's mouth to get further insight the same day and got it right the same day...

Bottom line though, we Husky fans are in such limbo with what's going on with this program that it's kinda causing a bit of a meltdown mentally... It sucks... The athletic department is so close to the vest about important info that we need to/should know... my two cents...

Dez lost credibility today, no two ways about it. Whether one source or two, Twitter bit him in the . Classic rush to be first instead of rush to be right.

This!

This is why I hate new-age journalism. Tweets, blogs, Facebook,....bull$#it. Be the first one! Be the first one! Nobody does any investigating anymore, nor do they care if they get something wrong. They just follow it up with a "mea culpa." And I'm not just pointing out Dez. I think Dez is the least of the problems. The entire industry is just broken....

Did Michael Smith really tweet today? #uconn80 or something like that. If so, does he know something or did he read Dez's comments and react to that?

I was told by a damn good editor many years ago, that if your mother tells you she loves you, you'd better get a second source.
But hardly anyone does that kind of reporting anymore. Not only do reporters fail to get independent confirmation, stories are written with the central fact unattributed. The Courant was reporting the other day that Anne Donovan got the job at The Sun and was using a tweet on the New London Day's website as its source. That's really poor. That one turned out to be true.
And, of course, it's not just the Courant. It's worse at smaller papers. And there are many reasons for it, but it starts with the fact that newsrooms have been gutted by budget cuts and reporting staffs are often half of what they used to be. It's actually quite sad.
There's also more of a premium to break stories than ever before. Newspapers for centuries had a 24-hour news cycle. Plenty of time to get confirmation. In an age when most news breaks instantly on twitter, you are writing on deadline every minute of every day.
So yeah, no excuse for Desmond. He got a tip, he ran with it and got burned. If he had waited to talk with GDL before tweeting the coach was leaving, he'd be in a much better place at the moment. As would all of his readers.

So I had this thought as well. I also saw that someone posted a tweet presumably from Tim Willman. Can anyone confirm this? I would do it myself, but I'm a dinosaur who doesn't tweet.

I suppose even if they really did tweet today, it's possible that they were just reading what we were reading and responding in "real time"...

I really hope Warde saw the jubilation within the UConn fanbase that GDL was leaving and will force a move here. C'mon man. Give us SOMETHING. GDL HAS TO GO!

I know I'm in the minority in generally liking DC's coverage... but man oh man was he had today. I'm just praying it was some small contract snag that will be ironed out tomorrow.

After what just occurred on "social media" in terms of the way UConn fans were jumping for joy and practically pushing the guy out the door, it is going to be very very difficult for GDL to come back in the same capacity that he was a month ago. Even if PP doesn't see the stuff, someone in the athletic department does (many of you may recall when they made a famous BYer change his avatar). I don't see any way that this can end where GDL has the exact same position here by the time the Spring Game rolls around...

I had the EXACT same thoughts!

1) I generally like Dez's stuff, and I treat him for what he is; someone paid to look for UConn-centric scoops and not necessarily a paid advocate of UConn.
2) I was also hoping that this is just a contract snag between GDL and the Giants.

I hope that the Giants didn't happen to stumble upon the BY and pull the deal based on the reaction from our fans!!!

We've been feeling bad for months. Maybe now just a little worse than bad. But wasn't it nice to have that glimmer of hope for just a few minutes? I'd actually forgotten what hope felt like. Admit it you felt lighter and happier than you have since we made the BCS. So Dez got it wrong, but it was worth it. ;)
