DePaul Post Game Thread

I'm more and more impressed with the duo of Mullins and Reibe. They are just making high IQ heady plays.
Mullins is especially more advanced in defense than all of us thought...
The inbound steal and bounce off to Silas is just ridiculous
I liked the three assists that Smith had. Two to Reibe and one to Reed. Reibe had much better game than Providence although he missed some bunnies.

The problem I see with the end of game subs, they are poor defensively and sloppy on offense. At least play solid defense, even if you do not score.

I get your point but there is dare I say a Larry Birdish feel to Mullins game. In the NBA you have to be able to hit the three to be a superstar so far that is a weakness with Steph. Mullins by the end of the year is going to be nearly impossible to deal with for opponents.
Tell that to Shai who just won the MVP and who Steph is compared with the most presently.

Since when do both teams not pull starters in a 20 point game with 2 minutes left. IDK, I thought that was weak for DePaul. Players aren’t dumb, they know they scored off our second team, don’t think it builds . I’m annoyed.
Usually, yeah. But I can see "no quit" as a culture piece. I loved Hurley running the starters back out.

Always remember in 1999 Duke won the metric national championship. I forget which one even gave them an award. I’ll take the one we won, thanks.
If Nissan pays more that $5 for that signage, they're getting ripped off.

Dan Hurley postgame press conference:

I totally agree on his take on "physicality" and style of play in the BE at the 14:40 mark. I know we have fans around the BE and the country that love the rock fight versions of basketball. I don't. I want tight whistles and respect for freedom of movement. Notice he correctly states the lesser teams are the one resorting to that. Seton Hall I am looking at you.

More Reibe and Ross please. We can be a more efficient offense with Reibe. A better defense with Ross vs Solo

Come on. It was clearly a message to the subs. Especially Furphy. Lazy turnover. Then he put the subs back in minus Furphy
Guarantee if we were up 25, he’d have let them play through it and send the message in film study. You don’t want to send starters back in if you don’t have to.

If he wanted to “send a message” he also could have put in the euro guys, Koroma and millender in place of the ones on the floor.

Hurley literally said it was to send a message to the subs.

Seemed like Hurley was a little upset when DePaul made a semi comeback late in the game and put the starters back in.
I'll take a win no matter how it comes.

This was the line up when they went on their run to end the game. That line up will never sniff the court in any sort of meaningful minutes. Annoying they couldn't at least hold it in place, but not concerned about the metrics/run.

gotta respect the opportunity to be on the floor. those guys didn't....and all 5 of them have reason to.

Interesting. All of our FG attempts were either behind the arc or in the paint. I did not p/u on this trait during the game.

Malachi played his most efficient and effective game since the early season. Didn’t monopolize the ball, and when he saw a player get open he made the pass no hesitation. If he continues playing like this he’ll be back to being a important player off the bench.

Much better 2nd half from Solo. He needs to create his own shot & beat his guy off the dribble and establish a mid-range game if he has any hope of raising his play to the next level. Relying solely on a jump-shot, perimeter game wont work as teams are scheming against him. Hope he figures it out. or else this offense wont work with AK & Mullins as much better shooters.

Basically, this team went through the motions today and beat a team soundly they should have beat soundly. The final score was closer than the game played out in the 2nd half, but it may hurt ranking in March.
It’s not going hurt our ranking at all. No one will remember this game- just that we won.

He also said he doesn’t care about NET and doesn’t want to see his starters get hurt. So why would he throw them back out there after they mentally cooled down?

Nor should he. At this point we have the inside track to the East #1 seed. We control our destiny. If we don’t get it then something will have gone wrong between now and selection Sunday.
He's a great coach. I'd love to see him get DePaul to be consistently good.
You know what? He may just do that. My sense is that Depaul the university is trying to figure out what to do about ATHLETICS and more specifically basketball. If someone makes the right decision on points of emphasis, Depaul could be a real load.

How do we square having one of the best resumes in the country, but sitting 9th in KenPom? One spot below an Illinois team we manhandled. I have to think we’re better than metrics indicate

Good team that wins games, but doesn’t step on throats of opponents worse than us
You need to run up the score in games like this to be highly rated in kenpom

Reibe and Smith were both really important in the early part of the season. Silas was having foul problems and staying on the court. and Tarris was obviously hurt. Since then, both Tarris and Silas have assumed dominant status at their positions. I believe Reibe and Smith have actually taken a step back because they are no longer forced into a role of significance. Remember, there were votes for Malachi starting over Silas not long ago!🤣

To take his word for it from the press conference when a reporter asked him about putting the starters back in, it was to send a message to the subs. Other than elaborating that, I can’t read the man’s mind.

I think we'll live. UConn won 11 in a row once, seven of those games against ranked teams. He put us 10th.

Hey what happened to the W on the earlier DePaul game? Too much beer? Did you start to write L?!
The pencil I am using is falling apart. I just keep using it anyway.

Winner: UConn off to best Big East start in 24 seasons

Don't look now, but No. 4 UConn -- which won national titles in 2023 and 2024 under coach Dan Hurley -- is quietly (or perhaps not-so-quietly all of a sudden) off to its best start to a season in nearly two decades. The Huskies downed DePaul, 72-60, to improve to 16-1 overall — building off their best start to a season since 2008-09 when it opened 24-2. The win also moved UConn to 6-0 in Big East play for the first time in 24 seasons.

Keeping your starters in the game and pressing the 2nd team subs when the opposing team up 20 has pulled theirs is bush league.
