December General CBB Discussion Thread (Non-BE)

Heard the culture is terrible and the players don’t even like each other like that.
Pope basically breaking down at the podium a couple games ago was a signal something is really off.

This is the danger of going heavy portal. You're grabbing a hodge podge of kids that you haven't raised. It's hard to build culture with that template.

Well the ACC is acquitting itself much better this year in the ACC/SEC Challenge. Last year I think they only won 2 games. Louisville should handle Arkansas and I think NC State can beat Auburn. I don't see Clemson beating Bama.

Calipari will beat Louisville. Just this one game, he'll coach with an edge about him, would be very surprised if they don't play well.

And then they will lose their next game.

Is it me, or are there more big-time OOC power battles this year than in previous years? Feel like every day there is a huge game between major teams.
There are more.

By the end of this week, college basketball will have given us 36 ranked-on-ranked nonconference matchups through the first five weeks of the season.

Last year the total was 31. The year before that it was 28.

Btw, not surprising they have the Big East 5th out of 5 power conferences. It says the BE is 4-8 against ranked teams this year. So UConn has 3 of the 4 wins? Talk about carrying the conference!

By any and every objective metric, the Big East is a firm fifth in the high-major hierarchy, even with UConn looking like a top-three team. The Huskies' dominance aside, the Big East looks fated to be the worst high-major in 2025-26.

The new shape of early season feels like it really gives you a crystallized view in what to expect in March, early. Where in the past, it was more of a guessing game into conference season.

I'd love if they got back to what they used to be and we got a series going with them as a prelude to joining the conference.
I remember when many of them said we will never win a title after down years in the AAC. Lol. Its funny how things turned.

Congrats on their win against Tenn though. I hope this gets Autry a lifetime contract extension.

I think Pope needs to start getting his pipeline of HS kids in, has needed to go portal way too much these two years. Doesn’t strike me as a guy who is built to cultivate mercenaries.

I agree but I don't think UK fans (donors) are going to wait for that to happen. Same issue with SJU at the start of the last few years, too many mercenaries. Of course Pitino is a much better coach than Pope, but my point stands. It especially hurts because this is one of the best freshmen classes in a while in terms of top tier depth and UK whiffed on every single big recruit out there. The best they got was Acaden Lewis who decommited (obviously) because they kept recruiting transfer PGs.

Sean Miller is a great coach. It's surprising to me that Texas looks like complete ass at home against Virginia as they are down 19 at HT.

Good call here!

Texas looks inept and not doing us any favors.

I don't know. I think some of those Xavier teams were very talented and underachieved.

Ahh... thx for the confirmation. I believe SJU will be a major player by the end of the year, but jeez, the rest of the conference is pretty mediocre.... again.

Got to love Rupp Rafters wishing they could have Cal back because Cal beat Ville but Pope can't. That insane fanbase is going to make Pope wish he never left BYU. I don't know why anyone takes that job in today's portal world.
I've spent some time in Kentucky for work, and yes they are a little crazy, but the fans don't want Cal back. He's basically doing the same thing at Arkansas. Will win a big game here and there, then lose to teams that are awful. It was time for that change, but Pope is not it.

That place is just twisted... No other fan base roots harder or tries to destroy their team more than they do. Haven't been back in a while, but have they turned on Pope yet?

EDIT> Just went there. Yup, they are turning.

How many guys are out for Kentucky? I don't even know most of these players. How could they spend $22 million on these guys? Down big early to Gonzaga.

And it’s gross. UK fans throwing in white towel. Pope is going to get serious heat this year if this doesn’t turn around.
