December General CBB Discussion Thread (Non-BE)

On the table? You didn't think a one seed was on the table before today.

The goal should be #1 overall heading into the tournament. We would be #1 now if healthy.
michigan would be #1 due to their gaudy margins.

now, i'm not sold on the quality of their competition on the whole, but the poll voters are stupid.

Do we think Duke and Michigan will both still be undefeated by the time they play each other on 2/21?

I’m calling a Duke loss to UNC before then, and then Duke beats Michigan. In the meantime Arizona loses to BYU and maybe someone else and UConn sweeps up till that point and takes over the number 1 ranking. Doomed?

…Well, at least Duke definitely won’t be.

He actually has some decent potential - good size and skill on the wing. But the argument way back when that he left because we brought in Demary and Smith and he couldn’t play point guard was silly. He isn’t a point guard … or even a combo guard.

His potential is high IMO but I don't think he is at the right program. He's super quick and a very good athlete but he plays like a chicken with it's head cut off and is allowed to do so. Maybe him coming off the bench is a sign they are trying to rein him in but the games I've seen don't seem to be that.

I'd say he's like Ross was as a freshman but quicker and much thinner. That would be about the amount of PT he would get for this UConn team too, little to none.

Purdue beats Michigan in Mackey in Feb
michigan going to lose multiple times, IMO.

their schedule has been effectively devoid of 1A games, except for routinely overrated Gonzaga. Their high tempo leads to high scoring, and higher margins on average for comparatively ranked opponents....and despite their weak schedule, they've still almost lost twice, and don't play anyone for another month yet.

There's a real world where they lose several games down the stretch and fall off the 1 line....their schedule is ridiculously easy then backloaded.

Pardon if not of interest, but I found the Duke 71-70 loss a surprise and opens up UCONN top 4 entry on Monday. They had a 16 point second half lead before losing at the end.

Any thoughts by the BB intelligentsia?

I will readily admit that Duke losing last night put a good sized smile on my face and I also will be very happy seeing us ranked ahead of them Monday.

I happen to believe we are the better team and have played a tougher schedule to date, I also believe that there is little reason to put too much time or effort into worrying about where we sit this early in the season. I believe the chances of both schools entering the tournament with only one loss are extremely light. Sadly, I also believe that if that does happen, the selection committee will place Duke ahead of us. Fortunately, I don't believe we need the committee to rank us above Duke (or any of the other schools that will be competing for a one seed) to win the tournament

we shouldn't undersell a 250lb 6'9 PF with touch and handles, especially when the C is 6'11 250.

Karaban can't handle that on D, and Nbongba is a decent enough rebounder. So it would come down to whether we could limit their other pieces, and abuse the matchup on offense. IMO demary needs to be more aggressive to really break down their D, and they have their own guard issues.

I'd say it's probably pretty even right now, but uconn has a much higher ceiling.

They choked against BYU in the Jimmy V, should’ve figured they can’t be fully trusted here.

I think there’s a genuine problem with Scheyer’s teams melting down in close games, considering that this cost them a title game earlier this year. They short-circuit when they don’t expect tight finishes.

Yeah, I disagree. Unless I missed the contact it looked like he was riding along with him and in no way does that deserve to get called with 3 seconds left. It affected nothing and I didn’t see hands, I saw physical bodying. But I’m open to being shown wrong, I watched it once on my phone.
Here is the video. If it were a foul, I don't think many refs call this without some more egregious grabbing going on. Certainly not a shooting foul. Awful to award free throws there

All this talk about how much the Big East teams stink. So many of these other power conference teams stink. Pitt who stinks beat Penn State 80-46 today.

Penn State is a football school and I believe it has a pretty solid all-around athletic department, but with basketball, I don't think they're even trying. They just lost to Pitt 80-46 and Pitt itself is highly suspect. throw in Temple and Nova recently and maybe it's a Pennsylvania thing

Plenty of bad basketball at the bottom of all these leagues, the issue is that we have nothing good at the top. Are top teams are mediocre in other leagues, at best.

Would Seton Hall be a tourney team in the Big 12?
