Dear John Fanta

He’s our sports reporter fanboy and he’s totally biased and in the bag for UConn. Yes he reports but he’s not down the middle. Remember Joe D?
That said, I like him especially when you have the opposite types out there like Goodman.
His team access is improved by his pro UConn style and he uses it. Maybe he called it wrong but let’s not get carried away.

I'm still a fan of Fanta. Sure he embarrassed himself a little this weekend, but he's a young guy trying to make it in the industry (I'm pretty sure he's only 28) so I'm not going to be too hard on him. He's an awesome and passionate dude and has a bright future... I'm sure he'll learn from this weekend.

Even on the F68 wrap up they go on about how Hurley was leaning the Lakers the other day and went back and forth and whatnot. You clowns know nothing. I only made it 3 minutes.

This is such a lame thread. Digging on Fanta when he’s been a UConn fan boy all along. He has a job to do, gave his opinion, so what. He still loves UConn and is a big advocate out there.

Some of you need to decide to just be nice and happy. It a choice, just make it and flip the switch. This look can pop up once in a while but come on, really we’re digging Fanta now? Who’s next?
Going on the radio and stating "I have it on good authority the Lakers are offering him at least $100 million guaranteed" is not an opinion

Good lord, people. John Fanta is NOT a "UConn fan boy", he's a front running "journalist" phoney. If Hurley left and the UConn program were in tatters, you really think John Fanta would still be a fan boy ? I'm going to let you in on a secret - he wouldn't.

The only thing John Fanta is a "fan boy" for is creme filled donuts.

Even when Dauster did his Top Dogs podcast it was as if it was foregone conclusion that Hurley was gone. The whole episode was about who his potential replacements could be and what UConn would look like post Hurley. Made no sense, and I agree it seemed like the F68 crew wanted him gone.

Opinion. You are assured of this…. How?

I said this when he predicted Dan Hurley to the Lakers:

I think Fanta thought the writing was on the wall, so he decided to butter him up by talking about what a great opportunity it was and how he'd be crazy not to take it.

And now, according to Fanta, it's just a wonderful day for college basketball.

He didn't come out of this looking great, I gotta say.
It was obvious he was staying, maybe Fanta is the clown he appears to be. Common sense told you he would stay put. He has lost all credibility

Good take here. When you post emotionally and from the heart, this happens. I’ll take Fanta over the next 20 behind him.

Fanta is an enthusiastic supporter of the BE. However-It seemed to be me like his "sources' were Goodman and Dauster. Always talking about 50/50 even at the BJ concert. There was more happening than that behind the scenes. So-- He was either outside the inside circle or just not wired into the Dan's peeps to know what was really going on.

Or he has no common sense and does not think for himself. Hurleys dad is his mentor and hero. He is 76 and is not traveling to la. That is all the information needed, the rest is noise.

Is there a single reporter who got anything right in this saga? It's almost as if Hurley got the collective media to add misdirection to the situation.

I have much more of a problem with Jeff Goodman acting as though he had all this information ahead of time in his post announcement media.
Pitino.

Perhaps, but then he's a real good actor who I'm certain will continue to fool me.

Meh! Fanta was coping. Thats all he was doing. He didnt mean none of that bs he was saying. Inside he was

From Suitcase school in the early 90s to Basketball Blue Blood is wild.

Also I am just in utter disbelief at what just happened

I’m a big fan of Fanta…I think he will be one of the biggest stars in broadcasting in a few years
Hi John,

You’re still better than Dauster and Goodman but in thin ice

Goodman was pondering if Hurley may regret this a few years down the line. I dont know why Hurley would regret going for a 3 peat with another stacked team versus try the NBA (which he could fail miserably). Hurley has plenty of time to try the NBA, just seemed like an idiotic take.

.-.
The whole Field of 68 crew has had a brutal year. They try too hard to be edgy. Goodman by far the worst of them.
If they weren't so UConn-centric they'd be dead to me. Goodman is legitimately terrible. I had it on as background noise today, and his shoe-horning in of Hurley's "weirdo" room has become so predictable. Almost everything that comes out of that man's mouth is complete cringe. Also did it in their AK is back interview, at the expense of an interesting question from Dauster.

I do appreciate Fanta's strength of articulating the bigger picture of important moments like this. I think he gets it, even if he went amateur hour with this story.

All fanboying aside, I think Fanta's (and pretty much every other journalists') fatal error was thinking the NBA was simply something nobody in their right mind could ever say 'NO' to; that there's nothing in college basketball worth aspiring to more than coaching a top NBA brand.

Simply wrong. The NBA is not the same sports league it was 2 to 5 decades ago. Basketball has grown bigtime around the world and the NBA is far removed from being the single source of big money in basketball. March Madness consistently beats the NBA Finals in ratings every year and now top players don't need to rely on NBA prospects to feed their families.

The words "You better get us now cause it's coming" have never been more prophetic.

...and let's not give Woj a free pass either. It's so obvious he was helping the Lakers frame a narrative and thus being loose with the facts.
Was it Woj that put "100 million" out? We wouldn't have been so worried if we'd had the real numbers.

I'll give Fanta a pass, he's often too obvious with his infatuation with us.
Maybe, but Fanta is infatuated with all things including us, the big east, college basketball, college athletics, etc. I would say it is part of his schtick, but I think it's just who is. I bumped into him on a train into MSG and he jumped into our conversation about UConn. He's pretty much the same guy he is on TV, maybe just with the volume backed down to 9.
