UC Davis returns all 5 starters from last year, 10 of 11 players and their top 9 scorers. That's the good news. The bad news is they were 15-16 overall last season.

More bad news, we beat them 97-37 last year. Don't know if it will be as bad this year, first game, on the road. But still, not pretty.

Great analysis and recap of the exhibition games. Watching the replays I was struck by how Breanna Stewart and Morgan Tuck have that ability of 'slowing the game down'. Not a lot of the unbridled quickness and energy you see with so many other basketball players but both seem to be at the right place at the right time and sure know how to fill the stat sheet in limited playing time. What a calming presence they must have on the younger players trying to find their niche on this juggernaut of a dynasty. Thanks, DDaddy!

I forgot about that. Before DD's report, I felt it would be difficult for UC Davis to get within 40. Now I think it will be tough for them to keep the loss to under 60... I think we have fewer question marks at the start of this year than we did at the start of last year (Bria's and Bank's injuries, lack of depth, what would the sophomore leap look like for Stewie and Moriah, what color would Dolson's hair be...)

I still believe this year's UCONN team will be better than last year's, but even if they are not, it's hard to fathom that they won't be more dominant. Given the beatdown UCONN gave to the unequivocal 2nd best team in the nation in the NC game last year, I'd consider it a big accomplishment for any team to get within 15 or 20 points of UCONN, never mind 10 as Tony alluded to in another post...

When you can bring 2 starters off the bench, which Morgan, and Kia could be, you are way ahead of everyone else.

Tracking the effect of substitutions is a good challenge for our BY stats experts.

It is likely that Kia and Morgan will enter the fray after about 5 minutes of play. At that point, the UConn pace should speed up. Repeat this again at the 10-minute mark.

The positive effect of replacing tiredness with fresh talent is an obvious strategem and should be verifiable statistically. So c'mon you numbers guys, make the case.

I dont know if UC Davis will have their 6'3" center Alyson Doherty. She tore her ACL last March and although rehab has gone well, and she wants to play, I dont think it would be a good idea to break her in vs #1. She didnt play in the exhibition game last week. Also, not in the exhibition game last week was their lead pg Molly Gruebel. I do not know why she missed the game or if she will play on Friday. I would think the only chance for Davis to be within 40 pts is if they hit a ton of three's and/or Geno rests a lot of regulars a lot of minutes.

According to DD's analysis:
"She is still rehabbing and won't be ready until conference play starts."

The one thing that DD omitted was how well the UCDavis players did against us last year which seems useful information as so many return.
Please find the following badly formatted box score from last season (sorry about the formatting).

Kelsey Harris, who DD designated their 3-point shooting specialist shot a very respectable 4-9 on her attempts and will be carefully watched.
Sydnee Fipps (their top scorer) with 13 was 4+ under her season average (not much) but hit none of her 5 / 3-point attempts. Even one of those made would have brought close to her norms…not bad

Turn-overs were a big problem: Molly Greubel who scored a bagel had 7… must have been really harassed and Sydnee Fipps had 5
with 3 forwards having 4 each. A big problem for them, if they can improve in that area, they could be much more competitive.

Fipps lead the team in rebounds with 6; 3 offensive…seems a solid performer
Kelsey Harris had 5 rebounds all defensive

Only eight assists total for the team (as against UConn's 29) but then again, they didn't score that much either.
Again it was Fipps and Harris who led the way.

Discounting the freshman (who seem to be quite good, but may or may not freak), the two bell-weathers who seem solid players are the two mentioned regularly above. No reason to think they will be worse than last year.

This game may be slightly more competitive than we expect; UConn by 20-25.

At least they have some size, unlike the exhibition teams. It won't be close; however, being at home and having many experienced players returning should make the score closer than last year. UConn 87- UC Davis 47.

Kelsey Harris for UC Davis, played on the same Cal Swish team with Katie Lou's older sister Bonnie and former Huskie Lauren Englen. She also played for Brea Olinda HS, which was Mater Dei's main rival back when KLM was in HS. Harris is a very good 3 point shooter. She was at Iowa State for 2 seasons before transfering back to California.
