I get that- but people learn a lot in 10 years, too. I sure hope that people don't think what I did 10 years ago is an indicator of what I can/will do today! :)
I hope you are right...I just have a feeling you can't teach an old dog new tricks

It's not learning alot. I am sure Hughes could run a 5-2 if asked. It's how the head man wants his d to run. If Coach P wants a 3-4, Hughes will run a 3-4. If he wants to blitz aggressively, Hughes will oblige.

That's obviously a huge factor here. My only point was that its probably too soon to answer what type of D we'll be playing because of all the variables involved.

Hughes was DC from 2002-2004...the D he ran back then was DEFINITELY NOT an attacking style defense!!

Because Edsall required him to run a conservative scheme. When Orlando became DC, the scheme didn't change. Yet Orlando's scheme at FIU made Don Brown look conservative. Why do you think Brown left Maryland to come to UConn? Philosophical differences with Edsall.

No one system is better than another, you can win football games, win championships with all different basic fundamental concepts of playing the game, the key is being consistent, and it helps to have a coaching staff, and players across the board, that all enjoy, believe and want to play the game with a commonality in how they want things to be.

I'm fine with it. He's probably better than most of the candidates out there. He's put together top 10 defenses before. I'm fine with either system... both work. I prefer to watch a more agressive style of defense but I don't get bent out of shape like some people do about the style of play.

I'm not sure how aggressive you will be able to be on D next year without any weakside DEs to replace Trevardo and generate a pass rush. Hopefully EJ Norris is part of the answer, but man -- he looked to be a long way from having an impact when we saw him on the field last year.

I really think we're going to see a lot more 3-4 this year. The pass rush will have to come from the LB's.

I've been thinking that a 3-4 scheme would fit our personnel much better this year. The reason: with the single exception of Joseph, I'm not sure we have any 4-3 DEs. If you play a 3-4, however, Pruitt and Willman and McBride can all line up opposite Joseph, or spell him, you have stephen and Campenni in the middle at DT and you use Stewart and Ashiru as outside LBs, backed up by Norris, with Vann and Donohue fighting for the second ILB spot next to Smallwood.

The combination of better talent at LB than DL and the lack of a true Trevardo type WSDE makes this a very interesting possibility.

In my humble opinion, the key to being able to send pressure across the line of scrimmage regularly in both run and pass down and distance, comes from your entire approach to the game, in finding ways to be able to demand a double/combo blocks somewhere, which will allow someone else to either be matched up single, or have a free run, based on the offensive formation.

Also, I think the concepts of strong side / weakside are quickly becoming obsolete in defensive systems. There are so many multiple TE and loaded backfield sets now in the offensive game, as well as the basics of defending the zone/read/option play systems, that the concept of strong side/weakside is pretty much gone from teh game on D. IMO.

Trevardo is a special player because he has an incredible burst of speed out of the three point stance. Very, very fast out of his stance and getting his feet and ass down and moving. Combine that with learning hand placement, leverage and pass rush techniques, and lots of playing time, and you get the career UCONN sack leader. He'll be missed. BUt somebody else will fill in his shoes.

Defense all starts with defending the run, in my book, everything is built off of stopping the run. I disagree on the 3-4 thing, I think we're at least a year away, and will be playing a lot of 4 man hands down defensive lines again.

I think that in a true 4 linebacker playing upright, 3-4 system, we aren't ready for it yet, because the hardest part of building a really powerful 3-4 system, is finding three defensive linemen, that are big enough, have arms long enough, and are strong enough to play two gap control run defense, if they need to, head to head with any one of the 5 man offensive front. I think with the DT's we've recruited recently, we'll be ready for a true 4 linebacker defensive system in a year or two. We're certainly stocking up the barns with linebackers for it, but we don't have the space eaters on the DL ready to go up and down the line yet with a three man front at least two deep on the depth chart (because you absolutely need to rotate fresh legs in on the DL to do it) - but when you look at who's coming in, and who've we've got, it looks like we'll be ready in a year or so.

That's what it looks like to me at least, that is.

Stop the run, make teams one dimensional. If you can get a push up the middle, makes the outside lb or DE pass rush even better off the edge. Qb will roll right into the pressure, hopefully more turnovers this year, to help out the O.

Stop teams on 3rd downs. Other than turnovers, that's the key.

Got to stop the run, to get teams to 3rd downs regularly and play effective D. Says me.

Turnovers are key to winning games, not playing successful defense.

Going 5-7 last year with our defense, was the equivalent of the old saying among surgeons....."The surgery was a great success, but the patient died."

You can't stop the run better than we did last year. We went 2-5 in league.

There is no way we are going back to bend but don't break. Smallwood has been camping out in our opponents backfield for two years, it won't stop now. I'm sure Hughes had to interview for the position, he probably won the job by promoting his ability to keep the defense attacking with swagger.
