Dayton Post Game Thread

Baylor game next week should tell us a lot.
Flight home from HI must have been brutal

Time to swap out my pumpkin for some HUMBLE PIE.

My child and wife keep asking me, "What's wrong with UConn?". Offense, defense, roster construction...where does one begin?

The highs wouldn't be nearly so high if not for experiences like Maui '24. I feel for the Husky fans out there. Hope they can find zen in the surroundings.

Turn the page, back to work. Need to secure "upsets " vs Baylor, Texas, and Gonzaga.

MD Eastern Shore...on Saturday, not Sunday. Jetlag game, beware.

Karaban had to go to the hospital after the game. Yeesh, when it rains it pours.

.-.
Thought this was interesting:

UConn is the first AP Top 5 team to lose to an unranked opponent on 3 consecutive days since Louisville did so at the Great Alaska Shootout to open the 1986-87 season.

Louisville was also coming off of an NCAA title.

For those of you that have not seen it. Coach Hurley at the 29 minute mark. Nothing exciting, very humble.

When/ Will Danny see that we don’t have athleticism overall or height at guard to defend no help man in your face which Hurley wants to play. He needs to tone down HIS defensive identity and get it to fit our roster construction. Mahaney was able to play defense for 2 yrs at St marys.

You have to adjust as a coach. We can get taken 1 on 1 at every spot every game if we leave lesser athletes on island without Clingan behind them. We arent a defensive man lockdown team and wont be this year with our roster. Press some? Sag off our men? Play help D? Zone some? If you give up athleticism for BbIQ you have to fit your personnel. Concerns me with next years recruits athleticism as well if we don’t adjust.
100% accurate about next year's recruits... all are individually super talented with shooting skills and high bbiq's, but like our current roster, lacking athleticism. As we're seeing, you can't have an entire team of unathletic players like that and expect to be competent in man to man defense. Let's hope he recognizes this oversight and develops Nowell, Abraham & Stewart this year plus uses the portal so that the penalty is only this one lost season.

Went to bed early last night, so watching the replay. I knew the outcome before I started, but at no point this game did it feel like UConn was the better team.

Just start over Saturday.

Not gonna change what happened, so move on.
They have their work cut out for them, but as has been stated enough this week…..everything starts with defense.

No idea how they fix it. Wasn’t going to be fixed over the course of 3 consecutive games.
But gotta start Saturday

The season seems to have turned on one moment--Hurley's T in the Memphis game. (He just could not hear me screaming at the TV for him to siddown.) I thought that he was more restrained during the last two seasons, despite his cartoonish facial expressions.
Might be time to see a Buddhist. I would like to see what would happen if the assistants didn’t hold him back when he has these toddler tantrums. He looks like an absolute buffoon. He was more restrained because things were going his way. Toddlers don’t show restraint when they don’t get what they want.

How did Hurley and staff get this job? They. Clearly have no ideas what they are doing or how to assess talent vs role and need. Blah. Blah. Blah.
They realized they needed some shooters/offense to take the next step and the results spoke for themselves the last 2 years. Unfortunately, they took it to an extreme with this team and I'm afraid with next year's recruits as well because we are sorely lacking quickness and athleticism at every position. I'm sure he realizes this mistake by now. I love all our recruits for next year individually, but collectively, the team will lack quickness and athleticism again unless he finds a way to address this. A start would be getting the players we have with some athleticism some experience ASAP... i.e. We know Karaban & McNeeley will get their minutes this year, but beyond that, play Nowell, Abraham, Stewart and Reed this year as much as we can and be ready to hit the portal. This is a lost season. Come to grips with the fact that long term, Ball is a 2nd unit/perhaps 6th man on a good team due to his elite shooting. Ross, Mahaney, & Singare are not UConn level talent.

It’s hard to argue the team losing by 18 is the better team. Dayton also played better teams coming into this game than we did. I can’t imagine what Auburn would have done to us.

No idea how they’re teaching the guards to defend on the perimeter.
They overplay and deny, all over the half court. Which is stifling with an athlete like Castle or even a lineup like Memphis.

But if you have the speed disadvantage as the defender, you should give a step or 2 or get blown by. (we don't).

Then if someone gets beaten, your shell defense helps out, with a teammate leaving their man and you stop penetration. (we don't)

We stay with our man, don't stop penetration, and still give up the open 3 when our rotation quickly goes to hell, with high hedge on. Or samson tries to principle of verticality and he has his first foul 3 minutes in.

Danny is an EXCELLENT defensive coach, but his drive can turn into stubbornness. Most "all man" coaches are stubborn in my experience. I guess he thinks he can get this roster to play the style of man to man that he wants eventually. It takes some time to get good man D rotations down, but you need the right type of athlete to play so far up on their men to start. AK, Liam, Mahaney won't ever be able to D up in isolation 35 feet from the hoop & in ISO's, all our PG can be posted up.

Seeing a 2-3 and 1-3-1 late in 2 games is the start of his realization and hopefully adapting our X's and O's to our jimmys and joes. Just need to tone down the man to man overplay is a start but I dont think its gonna happen.

  • Nobody wants to score. We run great sets, great screens, great movement, then suddenly there’s 7-10 seconds left and nobody has even looked at the rim. No Newton or Cam to bail us out this year
We full way too much in love with this offense to the point it seems more important to run it than develop real offensive skills that help rise above the Xs and Os and score.

I’m hoping we push Solo as the 1A guy and have him get aggressive overall and live with the growing pains that come with it.

I said all summer he was the most impactful player in college hoops since Anthony Davis. Hurley gave himself and his genius offense all the credit though
lol

Leadership starts from the top. We all love Danny, but he needs to settle down. His antics and constant berating of the zebras was borderline unhinged. Losing sucks, but he made it worse with his actions.

We DO have a point guard BTW, Ahmad Nowell. We will see more of him very soon.

If you're pinning you hopes on Nowell, good luck. It's possible he'll be great. But right now, he looks like a freshman. And he has made virtually no impact in any game he has played.

I took a nap on the coach around 11 hoping I would wake up by game time. I missed the game as I completely passed out and didn't wake up till 240.

Some guys have all the luck .

I thought they would lose this one.. Seemed like a let’s get out of town game. Sort of like a baseball team playing an afternoon game to end a long road trip. Get it over with and get on the plane.

You are correct after all Danny and his gang of only coached Uccon to back you back championships. They are the most useless gang of coaches in this universe system. Your remarks are just genius thank you for gracing us fans with your Biblical level wisdom. You rock!!!

Anyone else a bit worried that Castle may end up being the only hit on talent evaluation from the 2023 class? It has been a pattern with Hurley that the kids he recruits are either above and beyond hits (Clingan, Jackson, Hawkins, Sanogo, Castle) or mid-major type misses (Diggins, Floyd, Gaffney)
No but it’s clear Singare isn’t it, after two years of practice he still looks like he has never played basketball before

Hurley’s toughest decision is who is going to play over Johnson.

Reed is starting and will play as long as he can. I would play Stewart at the 5 or Karaban at the 5 and Stewart at the 4.
He has a man crush on Johnson and needs to admit he was wrong…remember the “he has the potential to have his jersey on the wall” talk? Lol….

He did this with Andre too and was eventually vindicated, but let’s not forget that stretch where he was unplayable in 2023.

Sometimes “your guy” just never pans out ‍♂️

Carrots go in dressing, not stuffing.
There is no difference between the ingredients of sctuffing bs dressing EXCEPT where ea h is Cooke. Stuffing is cooked inside the bird and stuffing outside. I learned this the last year that my wife was alive when I cooked most of the Thanksgiving dinner under the wise watch-full supervision of my wife. Family members brought or cooked just about everything else. It was a Emirates le Thanksgiving for our family to having been able to spend it with my wife though sadly her last. If it wasn’t for my grandkids kids and surviving siblings I would no longer look forward to Thanksgiving. My wife was also a rabid UCONN FAN.
