Dan Hurley says UConn could lose ‘Basketball Capital of the World’ status without more support

Well thank god Hurley built the team and the culture before NIL really became a thing. It definitely helped out UConn football they never would've had a wr the caliber of a Skyler Bell who did turn down Michigan in the portal btw.

Who else besides Dan Hurley uses "Basketball Capital of the World," rather than "College Basketball Capital of the World" to describe UConn?
You are one weird dude. But I'm sure I'm not the first. You can't be less than 90, that's your only excuse :).

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but Jay Bilas was the one that created the moniker or slogan-UConn did not start that. Seth Greenberg uses that moniker or slogan as well.

That's the source of my adding the "college basketball" qualifier. I don't believe that the enlarged label can be well-defended. Also, the WBB program's
figures significantly in the moniker's strength.

Who else? The University of Connecticut. "Basketball Capital of the World" is what they put on the floor of Gampel.

"Basketball Capital of the World" is gender neutral.

Dan is doing well in the portal. If Mullins returns and Ball returns to his sophomore form, we will be formidable.

I wish Geno would wake up. Our #1 nemesis just landed the #2 player in the portal. We seem to be asleep. I also wish we could talk about it on the other board.

Dick Vitale was the first person who said it. Jay Bilas said it after that.

In fairness to Bilas and the moniker as we have adopted it, Vitale said “Capital of the Basketball World” lol

Thanks for this. I hadn't paid attention.

To me, it feels too self-claimed & debatable. As to "college basketball," it's the winning argument.

So it adds up to, "I'm wrong, and I don't favor it."

Yes, we need to exit the Big East.

1. Not a power conference so cannot get an ESPN style TV deal and we get fractured streaming services.
2. Not a power conference in results, so if we don't win the natty, it's not like there's 2-3 other teams that could. Only conferences that get multiple teams deep get big money from the NCAA to re-distribute to the member teams.
3. Val Ackerman nearly bankrupted the WNBA - now she's running the Big East the same way - earn money, do little.

.-.
NIL is destroying college basketball and UCONN could be Victim #1 in terms of impact and visibility.
“March Madness 2026 achieved record ratings, averaging 10.3 million viewers across its four networks, making it the most-watched tournament since 1993. The first weekend alone saw an average of 10.7 million viewers, with significant increases in viewership compared to previous years.”
Sounds pretty healthy to me.

I was just about to type the same thing. Vitale's words were not the exact moniker or slogan. When thinking about a moniker or slogan the exact words matter.

UConn is crediting it differently (see below). However, post 2014 championship, Bilas said it on air post game, tweeted it and it kept repeating as part of a package. I think that’s when it really gained traction and I think he deserves the credit.

Edit: the tweet also doesn’t match lol

In the winter of 1995, when the UConn men’s and women’s teams were simultaneously ranked #1 in the AP poll for the first time, The Daily Campus ran the headline: THE BASKETBALL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD.
