Per Goodman on twitter.

Interesting move. Martin is from Illinois, went to school at Purdue, and seemed like a good fit at Tennessee, so I'm not sure why he wanted to go out to the west coast. Cal must be throwing around some nice cash.

With him at the helm I actually thought Tennessee had a chance to solidify itself as the 3rd best team in a wide open SEC. Not sure how much of an upgrade Cal is, if any.

edit: Ah, ok. Just now realizing that the ice cold relationship between him and the school/fans. I guess this move makes a lot more sense now.

Wasn't Martin's seat getting hot in Knoxville before the tournament? Talk about saving yourself with a couple nice wins in March.

Cal is not nearly as good a job as it's made out to be.

Was never clear why Montgomery couldn't match his Stanford success at Cal. Those Stanford teams tended to flame out in the tournament but they were consistent one and two seeds for a few years there.

I bet the UT fans are clamouring for their savior, Bruce Pearl.

Confirmed with UT player that #Vols were informed of Cuonzo Martin's departure to Cal in a team meeting at 12:30. Martin was not present.

Looks like he pulled an Edsall. Cowardly and classless.

he also went after the Marquette job, he was trying to get outta there

Of course. He was on the hot seat before the tournament and the UT fans hated him.

Good for him...he deserves better than UT fans...they lust for Pearl, and now that he's off the market...Cuonzo becomes Gone-zo.

They THINK they can land Gregg Marshall or Shaka Smart...like Marquette, they're in for a rude awakening.

The fan base treated him like trash. He did a terrific job there after having to clean up Pearl's mess.

He deserves better and should be treated better at Cal.

Living and working in the Bay Area or Knoxville, Tennessee. Sure seems like a no-brainer, especially for a black man.

He was likely gone, had they not made that run. My wife and her family are Vols. (She is now a pretty rabid men's follower - the women: we don't talk about it). Those posting about Pearl are right, he was a god there. Tough to follow him.

Not a hard choice at all. The only thing is he probably has to pay 5-6 times for a home. It is still totally worth it.

Here's the thing. Tennessee seems to be an awful place to be a coach in any sport at the moment, but Cuonzo Martin was and is a mediocre coach who would/should have been fired if they hadn't made a run 1st to make the tourney & 2nd win a few games esp. with the talent he had available.
