One of the best parts of college basketball is the vitriol. But yeah, we should probably chill out a little bit. I used to get vile things yelled at me during college games and I never understood why. I didn't even PLAY, lol.

That being said, if I were a student, this letter would be my excuse to be even worse.

I never understood the desire to be angry or violent over a win. I was a sophomore living in the jungle in 99 and the last thing I wanted to do was throw rocks at cops or flip a car.

We did burn a couch in the quad after Ohio State, but a cop helped us get the fire going.

We beat Hillhouse AT Hillhouse in the state tourney one year and we didn’t even change after the game. Just grabbed our stuff and went to the bus….where the students/fans were waiting. Luckily there were about 10 cops to escort us out.

A parent once threatened to kill me and I had to get an escort from police when I was coaching. All because one of my players stepped over another kid a la Iverson over Tyron Lue while we were up by 20+.

And the thing was 1) I was playing my scrubs and making the kid take 3 passes before shooting to not run up the score, and 2) I BENCHED THE KID WHO WAS DISRESPECTFUL. I don't know what I could have done differently!

#1 reason youth sports is being ruined is parents.

Hillhouse——in our State of Connecticut. I am shocked I tell you, shocked.

Better than burning a coach ……..

I was threatened with having my head broken reffing my daughter’s softball game over a fly ball I called a foul. The guy and his wife were arrested for distributing illegal drugs later that summer. Nice roll models those parents were and a credit to our suburban paradise.

3 places you probably don’t want to play at when their teams are good.

Hillhouse, Weaver, and Bulkeley.

Don’t knock it til you tried it!!

Umpiring a LL playoff game, I called it for rain after 3 or 4 innings. It was literally monsoon conditions. The field had turned into a swamp and we had waited about an hour and half. In the pouring rain, the losing coach chased me to my car, pounding on it as I drove away yelling, "you'll never umpire in this town, again!"

To be fair, he was right! I was done with that nonsense.

I'm not a perfect citizen at many games, but I don't engage opposing fans and I never yell at college kids

The refs however, are a different story :)

In the fieldhouse or in the regular gymnasium?

I played for Career and played games in the fieldhouse. The gymnasium in the school is much smaller and much more hostile. The fieldhouse isn't that intimidating

School gym for me. Yes, it was hostile to say the least. lol

The previous year we played at their place in the regular season and they beat us fairly handily. Shamon Antrum was the NH Register State POY and dropped 29 on us. Went on to play at Washington State I think?

I’ve actually never played at Hillhouse so I’m moreso referring to what I’ve heard. Can’t believe they have a Jumbotron at the fieldhouse for high school games. Career used to have some really good teams too! I remember them making (and maybe winning?) state a few times during that late 2000s early 2010s time.

Definitely had times leaving Weaver where something got thrown at the bus.

We also burned a couch, one of our own and not the university's, outside Fairfield in the Jungle after beating Ohio State in the NIT title game.
