Correct answer AK and Liam were awful on D, and terribly inefficient on O. The net impact: losing basketball.
AK wasn't awful on D. He actually moved his feet well except for the spin move the Creighton big guy did on him at the end of the game when we needed a stop. He was actually pretty good guarding Neal after being switched on him. I do agree McNeeley was awful on D.

There are not a lot of those to go around - we’ll be part of a large auction. Let’s see what happens.
Ok if we can't get that then definitely a Mark Sears PG or at least one that has ability to drive and create offense. I have no faith in the current PGs we have on the roster.

Of course you can be a phony and a good coach. I think McDermott is a great guy and an excellent coach.

I like people everywhere but I've lived in the Midwest for just over 20 years now and I prefer the people out here to people on the east coast overall but I would never judge anyone based on where they're from or where they live.

My experience is the exact opposite of yours. I completely disagree with your stereotype and I don't undertand your takeaway at all with McDermott. Neal did the dunk with 1 second left as the coaches were shaking hands. Hurley and McDermott were cool with each other, they like each other. Luke had something to say, I don't know what it was and McDermott said something about how they didn't appreciate the 2 ring thing in Omaha. That was pretty clear because Neal did the same thing after the dunk. McDermott admonished Neal for the dunk and Neal apologized and gave respect to the UConn program. It's all a bunch of nothing and some of our fans sound like babies.

Hurley talks tons of crap, threatened to beat up a Creighton fan and was telling their fans he has two rings, told a ref not to turn his back on him because he's the best coach in the sport. I wouldn't stereotype eastcoasters as arrogant and fake tough guys because of Hurley's actions.
I wrote a long response to this post. Then deleted it. Of course I understand stereo typing is not a great way to think as it is just not something as a society we accept.

But I will offer this. I prefer when people have an issue with you they come to you and let you know. You know give respect get respect.

I prefer the east coast you talking to me approach. I prefer authentic to trying to avoid confrontation at any cost.

My experience after 20 years of living in Chicago and being successful in business that telling people what you really think rather than telling them what they want to hear is a better approach. I found that to be the exception not the norm with people I worked with or knew in Chicago.

Also if you think there is no difference on how people deal with societal issues/encounters does not vary from region to region of our country that would be an incredibly naive take.

yeah sadly, and UConn might get outbid for that type of PG. I think UConn will have to use a MoneyBall approach like they have been using in the past few years.

You might be right, though, since last year was a generationally great team on the way to the title, it seems like the coaching staff couldn't be as thorough in their due diligence in the transfer portal. The size of the guards for this year goes against everything Hurley usually prefers, which is big guards. Having said that, if Hass doesn't get that knee tendinitis, the PG situation wouldn't be optimal, but it might have been enough, barely though.

My concern is we applied the Moneyball approach this past portal round. You just can’t miss in the portal. This portal season may be very telling as to the direction of the program, who we can retain and who we can attract. If we have high end leavers and are picking from the discount aisle, someone needs to call Yormark and cut a deal.

Which is why I initially said a real 6’ point guard in the Spears category. There are more of those players around. The trick is to find one that not only can get to the basket but also has the ability to get his shot off once he gets there because if you are always going to look to pass when you get into the teeth of the defense teams will adjust.

They also have to be. ++ three point shooter.

Those kids are there to find. Heck Neptune found Poplar last year. One think UConn can use, is a dedicated portal GM. Tom Moore cannot be wearing 2 hats.

You seem to have a lot of concern about kids leaving and UConn perhaps not being able to compete for high end transfers. Or are you just giving a glass have empty possibility? Curious if you are hearing something through the grapevine.

Large PGs are not ample. Plenty of 6’5” wings. We could have used Poplar. And agree on Moore.

I hope they can find a bigger PG, but a 6'4 kid would do. Adams is thin but tall, so gotta hope his height will at least help but needs to hit the weight room. I really feel like Moore should either move into the full time GM role or they need to find someone to do so. The portal is too important to not have someone totally dedicated to it (doesn't mean they can't sit on the bench during game). It's gotta be a full-time job and UConn needs to find a guy to do it. Look, this was not a great year, but it wasn't an awful one. I have said it before, and I will say it again, Hurley is introspective and will change to make the team better. I suspect he will dive head-first into the portal, and you gotta hope he will find the "right" guys. Who those are I couldn't tell you, but I trust him to figure it out.

Fair enough. Concerning to say the least. I think the 4 freshman, so long as they aren't counted on to start and contribute right away, will be good players next year and will help, and I certainly hope Solo, Stewart, and Reed are back. Obviously, there is enough smoke about Hurley making roster changes. Finding the right guys is the key. We have to trust he will do so.

We will probably be able to shop early in the Portal this year as compared to the last two years.

Thought McNeeley played outside of himself, and didn't do the little things. But this team can't win with AK is off like that.
Ashworth and Kalk were minimized. Didn't stop other guys on Creighton from stepping up and far exceeding their career averages. Where were our guys doing that outside Hass (whom I think actually should've shot more often until he went cold)?

AK's shot was off again, but he was still doing a lot of little things winners do.

Liam was a ball hog. 20 shots, 0 assists. Basically a black hole.

Seven assists on 26 makes attests somewhat to Creighton's D, but also to effort on our end trying to get open and improvising.

Kind of how the ebbs and flows of sports works, and why it’s so hard to win year to year. Hard come down getting back into the details just after reaching the mountain top. He was lucky to have had such a set roster going into last year while also getting very lucky with Spencer who fell into his lap.

Kalk was minimized? In the 1st half, absolutely. He was a wrecking ball in the 2nd.

Was a planned strategy and McDermott chessing out there. We have two slow footed defenders at the 3 and 4, and the 2 for that matter.

Slow footed is the way to describe our main problem on both sides of the ball - yes. We look like were playing in slow motion and when it gets to a “one on one” play, we are getting smoked way to many times.

That is why I like Mahaney in the game because he plays at good pace/speed. Even with his passing, he doesn’t hesitate and guys know if they get to a spot - he will get it there lazer fast. To a lesser extent Nowell as well. We need speed on this team.

Didn’t expect him to say anything differently - remain curious to his evaluation when it was clear as day this team was rolling back a soft, non physical roster. If Samson, AK, Solo and a freshman 3 were your starters not sure complimenting with a AM was solving for that.
I think a few things:
  • stewart and ross both having major holes in their game, leaving us unable to more often utilize them to have a physical lineup when we needed it
  • the complete misevaluation and mahaney PG "experiment" Hurley has admitted that was a mistake to depend so much on that
  • the, and I think we both agree on this, still curious decision to stick to Samson Johnson when it is clearly the wrong choice...aka last night

I suspect once the season's dust has settled, Dan Hurley will be more open about what he would have done dinfferent.

Go to ESPN put on the Florida v. Alabama game. If you don’t see how much better these teams are then us this year after watching for five minutes, then you are just an unrealistic homer.

Just the overall speed of the game is way different than what we saw last night.

Last years team was an anomaly, we had below average athleticism at several positions but we had a generational rim protector, a nba rookie of the year and perhaps the smartest college basketball player this side of Jokic in Cam. Add in a winner a big point guard who could score Tristen and a great role player Alex. Mix it all together it became one of the best college teams of the last fifty years.

Don’t care about any bias rankings, last years team was in the top 5.

It looks like two different sports. They do what we do better AND are better at everything else, with dynamic athletes all over the floor. The BE has one team at that caliber of athletes and it’s StJ and we saw what they did to us and the BE. Look at guards like Martin and Lanier - these guys are chiseled men. We talk about Solo Ball being a foundational piece next year, well hit the weight room so you aren’t pushed around like a rag doll. I really don’t care if he can sling some 3s, we need dudes that are not specialists that are 2 way that don’t get molested on the defensive end. The Solo Ball this year is not a NC caliber player. Maybe he comes back that next year after an off season in the weight room and another year of maturing.
