As noted, Brianna Banks has been a steady statistical contributor this season. Her scoring, especially as expressed in fg% and her other contributions will not be that easy to replace.

She has averaged 17 minutes, though she did not start any games this season. It can be assumed a fair number of those minutes will be redistributed to Moriah Jefferson, who has averaged 16 minutes. Caroline Doty may likewise receive more minutes.

Between those two, their respective points and assists averages will need to spike if the loss of BB is to be overcome, adequately.

I think MJ and CD, the younger, can step up and wouldn't be surprised if they exceed expectations, given the need and the opportunity.

What say others?

I think that:

1) Brianna's consistently strong contributions as a disruptor/energizer/tempo-changer have in general outweighed her statistical contributions, which have been mixed from game to game and can be picked up by others for the most part (though not entirely). Sometimes the team doesn't so much need a bucket or even a steal as it needs the game to get a shot of adrenalin, usually to the detriment of the opponent, who starts to get rattled. Then the other players start kicking it into gear, we might get our transition going a little bit, etc. When this happens, BBanks won't get a stat but the whole team starts to take control, with the momentum often continuing even if Banks is subbed out.

2) Moriah hasn't really been pushed too far out of her comfort zone for substantial minutes yet, but that changes now. We will see what she's made of, not so much during those moments when she makes a great play, but when she makes a mistake...how does she follow up? Does she stay aggressive and keep contributing? She has to take more of the 'adrenalin' responsibility on her own, without getting frazzled herself. I think she can do it.

As one respnse, will Kaleena/Breanna be used more as a pure guard to enable the other 2 bigs to play more in compensation?

I was wondering that too. I think Geno wants to keep them inside more, but it may be worth trying out.

I honestly think that Breanna Stewart can help compensate for this loss. She can play more extended minutes from the bench and increase her scoring. As of late, IMO, she has been more of a true freshman. This is her time to step up. I think Jefferson will also pickup her minutes to help keep guard legs fresh. Either way, now is the time for these two freshmen to step up and get better. Both will be needed to win a NC. Kaleena, Kelly, and Stef can't do it alone. If Bria Hartley and these two can come to form, I think the Banks injury will be only a minor setback.

I very much agree that STEWIE is going to compensate for the loss of BB along with MO AND TUCK
if 2 bigs dont make sense to some KML CAN MOVE OVER TO THE 2
If BRIA can return to form that would help us big time I am not sure, but if she played like she did in the
duke game that would be awesome

It appears there are a lot of new line up possibilities and opportunities. Who knows, maybe the best new combinations should be kept under wraps until the Baylor game. Nothing like catching Kim Mulkey by surprise. ;-p

If you can catch Baylor by surprise with a new line-up, Kim Mulkey is dumber than I thought. We "only" have 10 remaining players and only 5 of them can be on the floor at any time so there are 10!/(10-5)! possible permutations of line-ups. Now I realize that's 30,240 possibilities but none of that should surprise an opposing coach.
Further, UCONN has had their games televised so there is more film of us than anybody. Any coach surprised by UCONN isn't very smart.

I originally posted this under the tweets thread but then I realized it probably belongs here:

Certainly losing Brianna Banks to an ACL tear stinks and certainly as a team we will miss her...but that is why it is a team sport...now everyone has to step up and make up for BB's loss. I don't think it will be easy but it won't be impossible either...

Let's take a look at the current roster:

Breanna Stewart 21.8 minutes 14 points; 6.7 RBs; .9 A/G; .95 S/G 3pt .74 / G

Moriah Jefferson 16.1 minutes 3.7 points; 1.7 RBs; 1.29 A/G; 1.42 S/G; 3pt .43 / G

Morgan Tuck 14.8 minutes 5.7 points; 3.4 RBs; 1.2 A/G; .55 S/G; 3pt .333 / G

Caroline Doty 17.3 minutes 3.6 points; 2.6 RBs; 2.4 A/G; .76 S/G; 3pt .90 / G

Bria Hartley 24.5 minutes 8.4 points; 2.8 RBs; 3.3 A/G; 1.21 S/G; 3pt 1.05 / G

Kiah Stokes 12.6 minutes 2.3 points; 3.9 RBs; .6 A/G; .20 S/G;

Kelly Faris 29.2 minutes 10.7 points; 5.1 RBs; 4.3 A/G; 2.66 S/G; 3pt 1.48 / G

KML 28.9 minutes 17.0 points; 5.8 RBs; 2.4 A/G; 1.5 S/G; 3pt 3.1 / G

BB 17.1 minutes 7.3 points; 1.7 RBs; 1.7 A/G; 1.2 S/G; 3pt .86 / G

So....if these players pick up Brianna's minutes and do not improve their current play one iota we can adjust their production for their additional minutes. I happen to think that Bria Hartley, Morgan Tuck, Kiah Stokes and Moriah Jefferson will all improve their production as we head towards the post season and the numbers below are actually very conservative as they do not account for any improvement over their current production.

Moriah picks up 5 more minutes for a 31 percnt increase
Morgan Tuck picks up 4 minutes for a 27 percent increase
Caroline Doty picks up 2 minutes for a 12 percent increase
Bria Hartley picks up 2 minutes for an 8 percent increase
Brianna Stewart picks up 2 minutes for a 9 percent increase
Kiah Stokes picks up 2 minutes for a 16 percent increase

Total minutes picked up = 17 minutes

Statistics adjusted by the player for the percentage increase in minutes:

MoJo points +1.15; RBs +.53; A/G +.4; S/G +.44; 3pt/G +.13
Brianna Stewart Points +1.26; RBs +.6; A/G +.08; S/G +.08 3pt +.07
Morgan Tuck Points +1.54; RBs +.91; A/G +.32; S/G +.15 3pt +.09
Caroline Doty Points +.43; RBs +.31; A/G +.29; S/G +.09 3pt +.11
Bria Hartley Points +.67 RBs +.22; A/G +.26; S/G +.1 3pt +.08
Kiah Stokes Points +.37 RBs +.62; A/G +.1; S/G +.03

Totals:

Points / G 5.42 Difference from BB's production / G = (-1.88)
Rebounds / G 3.19 Difference from BB's production / G = +1.49
Assists / G 1.45 Difference from BB's production / G = (-.25)
Steals / G .89 Difference from BB's production / G = (-.31)
3pt / G .41 Difference from BB's production / G = (-.45)

Caroline Doty Points +.43; RBs +.31; A/G +.29; S/G +.09 3pt +.11
Bria Hartley Points +.67 RBs +.22; A/G +.26; S/G +.1 3pt +.08
Kiah Stokes Points +.37 RBs +.62; A/G +.1; S/G +.03

Totals:

Points / G 5.42 Difference from BB's production / G = (-1.88)
Rebounds / G 3.19 Difference from BB's production / G = +1.49
Assists / G 1.45 Difference from BB's production / G = (-.25)
Steals / G .89 Difference from BB's production / G = (-.31)
3pt / G .41 Difference from BB's production / G = (-.45)

The above is well done :) Marquette game showed big jump in moriah minutes and big jump in CD minutes AND scoring. That outcome might be a little skewed because Tuck dnp (a minir factor in guard pt) and because UCONN has Marquette's number at present, where bench gets lots of pt anyway. We need more data. :-o

No thoughts...I'm shocked! Coming from this astute base of fans...I thought there would be some who would have feelings one way or the other on how UConn makes up for the loss of Brianna. But, then again, if Bria has officially broken out of her slump...that may be all that is needed...Bria is certainly capable of adding 7 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists to her current averages...
