Courant story on BCU AD interview

My comment was in regards to the UConn poster who was listening to the SportsHub Gresh and Zo show talking about the BC AD and inferred that Syracuse was part of the BE-ACC lawsuit. When in fact we stayed out of completely while Virginia Tech was involved then withdrew. Syracuse AD Jake Crouthamel did rip Fr. Leahy, but he is not longer the AD and Syracuse did not participate in the lawsuit after Va Gov. Warner got Va Tech into the ACC which was the context of my post. WingU-Conn is 100% right on my context.

All I'm saying is that this isn't about revenge on BCU's part since they admitted one lawsuit member, and two members with high ranking officials who personally attacked BC's president.

The is all about FB TV revenue. It begins and ends there. Therefore, anyone that has access to TV ratings and TV market data should be able to do the math quickly in terms of # of eyeballs and what each ratings point means to that market. Who has more TV revenue potential in these markets (estimates of markets per Nielsen in 2010):
New York City (#1) 7,515,330 - Uconn, RU or Cuse?
Pittsburgh (#24) 1,160,820 - Pitt (I suppose WVU should be considered but they are not part of any argument)
Hartford/New Haven (#30) 1,018,770 - Uconn (obviously)
Buffalo (#51), Rochester and Syracuse (#82) 1,417,380 - It would be Cuse

If anyone has ratings access for any of the toss up markets (actually any market) for any games involving the schools, it would help frame the discussion better. I could only find bowl games.

Nonetheless, add up the TV sets added with Cuse and Pitt at this point. If you assume that Cuse garners 25% of potential eyeballs in NYC among BE schools, based on the markets they add to the ACC, they win. And Pitt wins because of the size of their core market. It was and is all about FB TV revenue.

Do you have access to regular season ratings in any of the markets? If so, post them. I said, I could not find anything but bowl game ratings on-line. And, frankly, none of those support any great draw for Uconn when it comes to FB (and yes, we all know that opponent and time slot have a lot to do with that, that's why I am asking about regular season ratings). Also, UB may be more popular, however, are their games televised every week? (that is an honest question) and what are their ratings.

I posted this earlier regarding ratings, I can't find a single thing anywhere on Boston College. Does anybody know if NESN or any other carrier besides ESPN broadcasts BC athletics?

UConn sports on SNY - in the one year that they were on, with little to no advertising, put together an average 5.0 rating in mens basketball in 13 games. In five football games, they rated and average of 2.6. All in the Harford/NH DMA (approx 1.1 million tv sets)

Keep in mind, those games on SNY were not the premiere matchups that ESPN broadcasted.

The one big game SNY had in football - vs. Cincinatti rated a 6.1

I can't find links to any of ESPN's ratings based on specific programs anywhere, but I absolutely guarantee that ESPN is well aware of what teams are getting the most TV sets tuned in.

The odd thing about all of this conference stuff, is that UConn is top notch real estate in all of it.

I think it's really a matter of us finding the best fit for us, and I trully believe that if Defillippo is really a deciding swing vote for us not being invited to the ACC with the ESPN broadcasting rights in tow, then the guy is a complete idiot and he's basically killed athletics at Boston College.

sooner or later the ACC will get tired of cashing ESPN's check for BC, and ESPN will get tired of not having the north east broadcasting market in college sports if they lose UConn in two years.

I would safely venture to say that quite a few ACC folks wish that they had UConn in their league today instead of BC....

Heard that here yesterday..."too many private schools and for the most part what do they bring to the table?".
Interestingly enough, other than V Tech fans (include FSU and Clemson), most ACC fans are BB fans not FB fans. Might have something to do with the on field product.

What the ratings in the New York markets for Uconn, RU and Cuse? Look at Boston too and see where the ratings land. Where do the teams fit? I suspect someone on this board would have access to the ratings for the games off the major networks. If they did, I would hope they would post them so there can be some frame of reference for this discussion.

TV38 shows the ACC game of the week which is not always a BC game. NESN will show the game in tape delay usually that night or the following day.

Gresch and Zo killing Gene Defalippa on the Sports Hub about ten minutes ago. Called him dishonest about the lawsuit (Pitt and Cuse were part of it) and generally afraid of competing. Said UConn in the ACC would raise the level of interest in BC sports around Boston.

OK, let's say for the sake of argument that the Syracuse brand has seen better days. Now what exactly established the UConn brand in football and makes UConn a better brand?

And what exactly destroyed the Syracuse football brand? A run of bad seasons? Well every team has those, just a part of the cycle of sports and if a few bad seasons destroyed what SU had built over decades then how many bad seasons will it take PP to destroy what is at best a very tenuous football brand in UConn?

I get thinking that your school is the best but to try to equate the UConn football brand and that of SU is just silly.

Everyone who has been willing and able to read sportspages and web articles on television conferences for athletic conferences has known from mid to late spring that the ACC was tied in to a contract that was considerably below market value.

Once the A&M departure from the B-12 (and subsequent OU & UT discussions with the P-12) became official, it was obvious that the ACC losing members to the SEC was a possible by product of the B-12 fallout.

Everything that Swofford has demonstrated over the past decade indicates that he is more than willing to be proactive when a potential problem arises.

The above have been public knowlege long enough that itn would not be a leap of faith to believe that a) at some point prior to making offers to Cuse and Pitt, Swofford contacted ESPN in order to gather information on what it would take to reopen the television contract and what the return would be. While the information provided was likely very accurate, if ESPN's corporate attorneys are of any value, there is no way ESPN said or did anything that could be taken as hard evidence, merfely conjecture on how they would respond if certain scenarios were to change.

While there could well be a nuisance lawsuit from this, ESPN would have made damned sure they had enough palusible deniability here to protect themselves.

The analysis of what ESPN would be doing is probably accurate. However, Flipper's exaggerations, publicly released, might tilt the playing field a bit.
