Not sure that is 100% accurate:

>>If bowl eligible, BYU will participate in the Miami Beach Bowl in December, unless selected to participate in the college football playoff or one of the New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day bowl games.<< http://byucougars.com/m-football/byu-inks-deal-miami-beach-bowl

>>WHAT ABOUT BYU? - Under the new structure of the College Football Playoff and the associated bowls, there is not automatic way for BYU to be invited to the party. BYU is not eligible to be considered for the reserved spot among Group of Five champions, even if the Cougars are ranked and no Group of Five conference champion is ranked. BYU’s only way to gain a spot in the bowl rotation is to 1) be selected to play in the College Football Playoff as a semifinalist or 2) be selected as an at-large team in the remaining bowl spots that are open after conference champions and automatic bids are selected.<< http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsport...f-five-school-had-the-most-imrpessive-week-1/

They could in theory be invited to Fiesta, Cotton or Peach this year. Won't be easy but they are not boxed out.

They'd have to be unbeaten but it's very reasonable the Fiesta would take them in a heartbeat.

Agree. BYU is a very attractive at-large for a major bowl, especially out in the west. The Fiesta would take them in half a heartbeat. Look how many BYU fans showed up to watch them take us behind the woodshed, and none of them even left as the game got out of hand. The stadium was empty at the end, except for the BYU corner, which was packed. I was there with a BYU fan, and he wouldn't let me leave.

The fan base is huge and travels very well.

This might actually be a pretty strange year for the playoff system to begin. it is entirely possilbe that there really won't be a good team and we'll get another one of those all SEC finals that will just kill it right out of the box. The playoff people and ESPN are living in dread that the participants will be Louisville, Oregon, and a couple of SEC teams who have already played each other. they will hope they aren't on opposite the opening of Season 5 of Downton Abbey if the Final is Louisville-Missouri or Alabama-Auburn round 2. the selection committee is going ot make sure it isn't a bunch of teams nobody will watch and they'll also try and make sure that there are no reruns of previous games. those just don't draw audiences. They will do everything in their power to insure that the field has both name appeal and regional appeal, rankings be damned. don't be shocked if some conference champion game loser gets in and some conference champ with less media appeal gets left out. This is a made for tv "event" so they need teams that have national appeal.

I've seen conflicting information on this (see below). But, I guess it is theoretically possible they could play in one of the non-contract bowls, the Cotton, Fiesta or Peach, but would have to stand in line behind displaced conference champions and compete with conference runner ups. It will very difficult, which is by design.

But the access and payout problem gets worse for BYU in the new College Football Playoff, which is set to debut in 2014. If Navy joins the American Athletic Conference in 2015 as planned, BYU and Army will be the only "non-Notre Dame" football independents left in FBS, and neither is getting any kind of access to the six CFP contract bowls. The highest-rated conference champion among the "Group of Five"—AAC, MWC, MAC, C-USA and Sun Belt—will earn a spot in one of the four bowls not hosting the semifinals.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...tball-playoff-did-cougars-make-the-right-move

All conferences negotiated individual bowl contracts for their champions. Five conferences have arranged contracts for their champions to play in New Year’s bowl games — Atlantic Coast (Orange), Big Ten (Rose), Big 12 (Sugar), Pac-12 (Rose), and Southeastern (Sugar).

The highest ranked champion of the other five Football Bowl Subdivision conferences (the American Athletic, Conference- USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt), as determined by the selection committee, will play in one of the six New Year’s bowls. Other available berths will be awarded to the teams ranked highest by the committee. The committee will assign teams to bowls.

When the Fiesta, Cotton and Atlanta bowls are not hosting semifinal games, their participants will come from three sources: (1) The highest ranked champion among the five conferences listed in the paragraph above, (2) conference champions that are displaced when their contracted bowls host semifinals and (3) the remaining teams ranked highest in the committee’s rankings.

Question for everyone. Say BYU goes undefeated with an average margin of victory of like 30 and gets into the playoffs with seeding like this.

1) Florida State (13-0)
2) Georgia (12-1 - beats Bama in SEC title game)
3) BYU (12-0)
4) Alabama (10-3)

There's a series of things that would need to make this happen but let's ignore them (Bama was 3rd and lost to Georgia, whoever was 4th lost their conference title game, etc). So ignore how we get here or plug any P5 teams in that you please. If these are the playoff seeds, what gets the highest ratings in the championship game? I think Florida State v. BYU might simply because it gives a real story that the average fan outside of the southeast can care about.

FWIW I doubt BYU runs the table - it's just really hard to do. There were times against UConn they looked like a very average team. The story in that game is likely different if UConn doesn't cough the ball up on it's first drive.

2 SEC teams will get in. The conference winner and then either the conference runner-up, or the SEC West runner-up if they go 11-1 with their only loss to the SEC Champ.

There's no way two SEC teams aren't getting in. Especially if they have 1 loss.

BYU is not eligible for any of the CFP Contract Bowls. If they are bowl eligible their only option (aside from the 4-team playoff) is the Miami Beach Bowl.
They are not eligible for the three Contract Bowls (unless they make the Playoff.) However, they are eligible for the three "Host Bowls" - Fiesta, Cotton, and Peach. Those berths will go to the Best Conference Champion from the Group of Five and the five highest ranked teams not already in a Contract Bowl or the Playoff.
