Whenever the next severe recession hits, funding the football program will be a controversial topic. If they continue to be a joke then most people in CT will get disgusted that their taxes are raised to fund the $40 million red ink at football or that tuition and student fees are raised to cover the red ink. Until then, football is safe.
Football did not have a $40 million deficit.

Agree, though, that a football is successful the question becomes moot regardless of the economy.

You are correct. The athletic department as a whole had a $36 million deficit, and almost half of that was football according to the article I read
