Consistent With Geno's Promise of a Continued European Gaze

If I may ask my esteemed Montana colleague of thread posting, are you stating Geno has an interest in Muhl the Younger or that he should have an interest? :)

I have no idea. A few days ago he said Europe would be a continuing source of recruiting interest. There are those in Europe who have the opinion that Hana is the greater prospect of the two sisters and she was MVP of her league last year. Me, I wish she had more height, but she has Nika's fierce warrior court presence.

Speaking of old Westerns, if Gabby Williams and Tiffany Hayes come back, we can have Gabby Hayes. :D

I'm not sure who talked to Geno about the Euros but Geno seems to like coaching them. Hope the person who recommended them continues to do so. Popovich??

I'm wondering how many guards will Geno and staff recruit in 2022 and 2023. I would like to see Geno recruit a quick athletic guard that can get to the Rim and be a defensive stopper on defense. This team has problems stopping quick guards that drive to the basket. I don't see anyone on the roster and incoming recruits that have the quickness the team should have. Azzi may have in the past, but with her injuries, I'm not sure that she'll be able to keep up with ultra quick guards.

I offer, by way of proud poppa Darko Muhl:

Reminds me of Nika's stats.

On a more serious note, European and Canadian recruits have been a blessing at UCONN. Hardnosed and even more important hardworking. Geno often bemoans the differences between incoming players today versus 20 or so years ago. I suspect the foreign players are close to what he got in the 90's and early 2000's in terms of fundamentals, work ethic, good human beings, etc. He still gets the best "people" from the USA, but the USA recruiting pool of women who meet UCONN's all-round standards is definitely smaller.

John Wayne

Now, we have "The Mule" and we should get "The Bull". "You're durn tootin. Darn persnickity women".

Seriously though, I think the recruitment of Anna and Nika has opened up an area where Uconn has a very distinctive advantage. In Anna's case it was somewhat out of necessity as we missed out on a couple of US targets that year.

In Nika's case we were very lucky. She had already picked her four finalists before Uconn showed any interest at all. South Florida was one of those schools, but perhaps more importantly Louisville and Oregon were among her finalists as well. I suspect Uconn concluded if Louisville and Oregon are recruiting this girl, maybe we should check her out. They joined the party at the 11th hour and because of Uconn's legendary status she added one to her list.

While officially saying the usual things, soon after Uconn entered the conversation it was over and she made her choice. There are quite a few very good women's basketball programs that can compete with us for recruits, with a good legacy, famous coach, pretty big crowds and decent media coverage.

To many young girl's in foreign lands, they may know very little about some of those major US competitors, but they all know Uconn and Geno. My point is we have competitive advantages here, where there is more and more competition, but Uconn's relative fame compared to other programs is probably even greater abroad. To the point where a kid that has already named a final list of four will add a name to it if Uconn shows an interest even if it is late.

I think foreign recruitment should move from more of an afterthought or game-plan B to the front burner, because we would appear to have more advantages there than we even do domestically. Keep the Mule train running!

I don't think you win championships with most current European players. Nika and Anna are excellent players, however, we need the Onos and Paiges to stay number one. That said: Muhl is my current favorite Husky - so much fun to watch both on O and D.

They could corner the Borax sponsorship contract. The current owner of 20 Mule Team Borax is German chemical giant Henkel, so there should be no EU opposition.
How do you even know this, 'Bama? Do you have a pipeline to the Old Ranger. Remember him?

Yes. It's he, the original and still the best Old Ranger.

I do remember him. Did you know that Stanley Andrews, the actor who portrayed the Old Ranger, was also the voice of Daddy Warbucks on the old Little Orphan Annie radio program. The Boneyard is just a font of knowledge, or a source of useless claptrap depending upon which side of the bed you got up on!
