Here is a stat that will surprise many of us. According to MaxPreps, there are 24 players in the NFL that played HS football in Connecticut. This is tied for the 22nd highest state with Arkansas, Indiana, and Oklahoma and greater than Wisconsin, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, Iowa, Oregon, and Colorado (and more) and double the 12 from Massachusetts.

On a per capita basis, Connecticut has produced about as many NFL players as California, more than Pennsylvania, and slightly less than NJ.

Not surprising to me. My estimate is that two-to-four Connecticut players make the league every year. This might be even higher which is cool.

Once again the Connecticut produces no talent crowd is knocked on their buts.

I've pointed this out to Frank a number of times, and even showed how Conn. produces enough talent on a per capita basis to compete with New Jersey and Wisconsin (according to one of the studies at Grantland which I linked to). Connecticut is around 35th in number of blue chippers, but probably higher in the quality that goes onto the NFL. Frank tends to include Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine in something he calls New England, the weakest recruiting region in the country.

He is obvioudly knowledgable but, like all of us, has a suhbjective bias. The chart shows the region competes competitively with most of the states bandied about by various people. People are more enamored with the potential growth rates of the southeast. But those growth rates won't have a real significant impact for at least ten years and that's a long time to make bets. And when you split them down between loyalties I don't believe the numbers are there. Certainly people retiring from Michigan and Ohio will be more likely to retire in Florida than Mass. so there is that advantage for those southeast states But how much advantage is gained over a concentrated poplulation area with less cable competion is proabably less than the disadvantages such as travel and opening a pandora SEC box. I would venture Delaney has an alma mater bias in his decision making and is justifiying it. Not that there is anything wrong with that. And as far as justifications go, we've all seen a lot worse daily here on the Boneyard.
