You may be responsible for killing a conference before actually joining it, shortly after destroying a conference before actually leaving it. I think it is pretty clear that adding these two programs was never popular in Tallahassee or Clemson and was further evidence (at least in their minds, maybe reality) that Tobacco Road is serving their own interest. If we use 2009 athletic revenue, which is the earliest I could find, as a stand in for the value a school can bring then I really believe that the ACC would have been better off: a)doing nothing (6 ACC teams earned more than the #1 Big East Program, UConn), b) added UConn and WVU ($54M each, #39 and #40 overall), or c) UConn and Rutgers ($54M and $50M each and trying to sow up (to the extent that is possible) NYC.

Pitt was just a joke and I really don't understand the defense for adding this program. BC should be taken out to the shed for pushing them down that path.

In order to really do this comparison properly you would have to remove conference revenues from the equation.

By taking Syracuse and Pitt, Swofford guaranteed he would weaken his football league without increasing his TV contract. In the same move, he pushed TCU and WVU into the Big 12, giving the Big 12 2 Top 15 programs and solidifying it as one of the players in college football.

The right move was to merge the ACC into the Big East, bust the ESPN deal and renegotiate with NBC as a package deal. Swofford, like many on this board, viewed the ACC's success as a zero sum game vis-a-vis the Big East. The Big East was not his problem, it was his solution.

Reason number one Swofford was "not ahead of the curve" as many said when he grabbed for Pitt and Syracuse. It was a defensive move that was made with very little thought of the future.

Wonder why Cuse fans don't get excited about playing UCONN?

Hmmm mm...........
