Conference Team assessments

For the last 3 years at about this time I would do high level, school by school assessments of our rivals, and then make predictions. A few posters may chime in and tell me I was an idiot or that I got it about right. The Rutgers and Syracuse prediction threads would usually make it to 5 or 6 pages, the Cincinnati and USF writeups would be lucky to get to page 2.

I don't have the energy or interest to do it this year. I started to draft a single, conference wide prediction, and realized I don't know anything at all about most of these programs coming in. Then I decided to watch Casino for about the 30th time.

I am not sure what the point of this post is, other than to say that I have not completely transitioned expectations or accepted our new position in the college football world. As a result, I am having difficulty rallying myself for this season.

Funny, I don't think I've been as fired up for a season as I am for this one in the history of ever. The epic home schedule + a new OC + the chip on our shoulder to prove we belong = fired up. 8+ wins. Sellout rowdy crowds. Perception changes NOW.

I feel the whole league has that chip on their shoulder. I am not only pulling for UConn but will be pulling for every team in this conference this year. I plan on watching as many live or taped non conference games as possible to get a feel for these new neighbors and will find it very satisfying when Memphis beats Duke, UCF shocks the world and knocks off S. Carolina and Cincy embarrasses Purdue. Can June Jones and SMU make a game of it against A&M and their Heisman winner? And the same for Houston against BYU.

If the new league can produce.... then the pill won't be as bitter to take. But....UConn has to produce along with it for they probably have more to prove than anyone. If the Huskies are indeed a cornerstone of this new alliance I will find it intriguing to see who else steps up because you need more than one corner to build anything.

someone will step up, that is something I'm confident of. Think about the growth of the old BE football teams throughout time. Think about where Cincinnati started and where they're at now. These schools we're adding are in great markets with all the possibilities for someone to step up and become a major player. Could easily see a team like SMU becoming really good again.

On a side note I really wish we would've held out on the Tulsa add and tried to get Army instead. Having the Army/Navy rivalry game as a part of the American Athletic Conference would be a HUGE tv boost.

That's a separate TV contract and would never have been included in the AAC deal. It's worth more per year than what each team gets. No reason Army or Navy would toss that away.

I hope our conference mates beat ALL of their OOC opponents. Outside of that I am NOT pulling for the entire league. League parity and 8-4 champions going to crappy bowls will not help UConn`s casue. The model in the power conferences is to have have 2 or 3 perrenial top programs and a bunch of also-rans, some of whom occasionally rise up and have a big season. So if 1 or 2 other schools step up big so be it. But thats it.

Dude I usually say very little. Despite the incredible pain UConn has suffered in the last year, they're still playing football in a reasonably good conference. Lets get pumped! This could be a surprising year. I love how we're flying under the radar. If Weist is the genius I'm hoping for, we'll have a great year...rolled out the predictions
