Back in September, I chatted w/ new Columbia HC Kevin Hovde, who last was an assistant on Florida's championship team last season.

Since writing the preview two months ago, Hovde has definitely shown that he's keeping to his word of reimagining Columbia's roster (5th in nation in roster continuity) as a defensive and toughness-focused group with many of their lineups designed like Florida -- three guys sharing the floor that are 6'8+ -- so honestly, I see this group as a decent tune up for a Georgetown-esque team.

Fun fact: senior guard and one-time recruit [ties with Kevin Freeman after he was first an assistant at Penn State and offered by the Nittany Lions] Avery Brown's hometown is Beacon Falls, CT.

I am intrigued by Columbia and Hovde as their HC. Completely forgot about Avery Brown. Blast from the past. I watched Hampton Sanders in December 2024 when he was at NYU in a game against Yeshiva. He didn’t put up big numbers in that game and I wasn’t impressed with his level of athleticism - but he was a total floor general. Ran the Violets offense efficiently and effortlessly.

Whenever he has a poor first half of shooting, the Beacon Falls product will change his shoes at halftime.

"If the vibes weren't great in the first one, I'll always switch it up to give me a whole new energy," he said. "I kind of took that from Kemba."

He added, with a laugh: "I try not to have it happen too many times."

Sounds like a Hurley disciple. 😂

'No better feeling': CT's Avery Brown set for first game at Gampel Pavilion as UConn hosts Columbia

Columbia reads like a competitive opponent even apart from their rout of New Haven. And make no mistake, their 71-53 victory over New Haven, while comparable in score to UConn's win, was a rout from to start to finish. They led 42-18 at halftime and coasted home on the lead -- and they did this on NH's home court.

This is a game where UConn cannot afford the kind of 2 for 9 klunkers that AK and Solo so often toss into the mix. Our bench isn't any deeper than Columbia's. Our four tournament-class starters all have to show up. That's where the difference is.

Completely agree. The top teams in the Ivy are not the pushovers of yesteryear. Need to get out to a hot start and crush Columbia’s hopes and dreams!

This is a pretty insane take. Other than the obvious last two sentences.

Go find me the 2-9 shooting performances that Solo and AK “so often toss into the mix”.

Also, recall that @Hey Adrien! makes even teams like ETSU sound like scary Final Four contenders in his team reviews.

Holy crap Avery Brown is still in college? Wasn’t he an Ollie era recruit?
