College Football Playoff First Round

Dear God Miama for TA&M is one of the worst games I've ever witnessed in my life

Agree that the TAMU and Miami game wasn’t fun to watch. It could get worse. Good offenses against over matched defenses isn’t very fun to watch either. Hoping this won’t happen in the next two games, unless the underdogs are doing it.

Edited to add: Ole Miss only took 59 seconds to get a touchdown against Tulane.

A&M QB is terrible. That's the best a SEC team can get? I've watchled them a few times this year, he is just lousy.

They benefited from a weaker conference schedule (didn’t play Alabama, Georgia, or Ole Miss (or Tennessee or Vanderbilt)).

Watching that T A&M QB attempting to throw a pass makes me realize no amount of television money can buy talent evaluation. Joe is better.
I understand it was windy and made it difficult, but holy moly did neither QB look like they were even remotely competent. Miami playa like that in the next round they're getting blown out

The Green Wave seems to be evaporating so far. Way too easy for Ole Miss. I have a feeling this game is going to give ammunition to the "Get G5 teams out of the CFP" talking head clique.

Update: doing a little better early in the second quarter. Hope it keeps up. This game needs to be competitive.

That Miami/A&M game was absolutely hilarious. I have no other words to describe the outcome. When Reed fumbled on the pass attempt I let out an audible cackle. My wife was like 'What's so funny?'. I'm like, 'Honey I can't explain it to you.'

But Cristobal finally coached well in a big game. Nothing he could do about his kicker getting the yips.

Also:

Miami beat ND
Texas A&M beat ND
Miami beat A&M

CASE CLOSED, Bevacqua!

(And the committee is out there popping collars over these first two results).

Cristobol made one big mistake, and it was not riding the Fletcher kid all game. A&M couldn't stop that power run, but there was Miami running all sorts of wildcat plays, crazy formations, etc. That kid could have gone well over 200 yards today, and Miami would have won comfortably I think.

Also, the video of the A&M lineman saying Reuben Bain wasn't anything to really worry about aged like milk.

Hard to be competitive when your OL can't get you a single yard on two tries at a tush push.'

I actually think JMU will fare somewhat better offensively.

I wasn't all that worried about JMU being able to move the ball. But their defense is getting steamrolled. Oregon could score 70 tonight at this rate.

The lack of run game was on Shannon Dawson. He's the OC. Been taking heat for that all season.

1 miscue turns this into a blow out, JMU trickeration can't even result in a fg, can't even see a tease.

We could've beaten JMU and Tulane this year barring our defense of course.

Tulane gets mopped around by Ole Miss.
Oregon just scored 3rd touchdown and its the 2nd quarter.

I love the underdog story, but unfortunately in this NIL and P2 power consolidation era, the field is just unevenly stacked.
I want G5's to do well, but this is just not fair to them. And I now have no idea how to reach better parity. I don't want to eliminate G5's from the CFP.

one of my favorite games of all time was 2007 fiesta bowl - Boise St vs. Oklahoma - a cinderalla story.
It's just not possible for it to happen in this era.

G5 haters will say close the CFP door permanently to all G5 schools. That's their ultimate goal.

I HATE what football has become. screw Big 10, SEC, CFP and all the powers that be.

I would agree with you on Dawson, I just always fall back to the belief that the coordinators will do what the head guy allows them to do. Earlier this year, the complaint was Miami was too conservative. Then they opened it up down the stretch of the season, but today they were running stuff that made no sense. When they just lined up and ran Fletcher, they bullied the Aggies.

Both Tulane & JMU looking waaayyyy overmatched today, which will only get the anti-G5-in-CFP crowd chirping big time tonight.

JMU has no way to stop Oregon's offense which scores like lightning. 34-3 late 2nd qtr. 5 TDs on 21 offensive plays for the O.

JMU and Tulane weren't even undefeated, G5 teams should have to be undefeated or 1 close loss to a ranked team at worst.

Can't fault these teams it's the stupid playoff committee which does look a bit pre planned on their part.

There has to be a tiering of teams by athletic budget. James Madison is no longer playing the same sport as Oregon. I think a G5 team should not be eligible for the playoffs unless they are spending a minimum of $10 million a year in player compensation, or something like it.

We are already seeing unholy blowouts within Big 10 and SEC conference games, and that will only get worse. Same goes for Big 12 and ACC. Programs like BCU are not even pretending to try to compete.

Some close ones this afternoon. Not sure what was closer these games or UConn vs Iowa.

On second thought Iowa had a better shot than JMU. JMU simply doesn’t belong playing this game. No offense

I was just arguing with a UW graduate about this on a Seahawks board I frequent. Once you're in the club, you fall victim to just being annoyed that there are noncompetitive games in the mix. And I can agree to a point, because JMU and Tulane were not great teams, even by G5 standards. They're pretty good, but not really good enough to win against Oregon or Ole Miss, and it makes the path to the title easier for those two middling seeds. But there has to be a path to the CFP for outsider schools who are able to build a program that is good enough to compete, and proves itself. Maybe a strength of schedule/strength of victory qualification, coupled with a one-loss maximum, would work to distill the somewhat rare non-P4 schools who are good enough to give an Ole Miss a game from the schools who are overmatched. Maybe having a play-in level of the CFP where your Notre Dame or your other P4 who just missed the cut has to participate in a first-round play-in game against the best of the G5 schools, assuming no one qualifies automatically.

It's important for this to be worked out, because if it's not, it hastens the development of a two-tier system for all sports where only the P4 members can meaningfully compete for national championships in major sports and earn the perks that go along with that recognition, while everyone else is relegated to competing for some minor league-type title that doesn't carry the same clout, and diminishes the resources of the school as a whole over the long term.
